Forums - Sales Discussion - Famitsu Sales: Week 28, 2020 (Jul 06 - Jul 12)

Oh wow this is crazy. Another almost 100k week. Production has been going up and we can see it with bigger and bigger shipments but still crazy to think it is selling that much but still in lottery.

Switch will end up being MASSIVE in japan.

YTD is up by 1.2m now. Next week will probably be notably down again because of fluctuations in shipments, but as usual, it's hard to predict under these circumstances.

I was wrong before, but this week with some lotteries and some other info, this week looks to be flat or slightly higher, probably due to paper Mario coming out. To be safe I say between 80k-105k

Wow so Switch this year is where it was at end of October last year. Starting to take on the beginning of 2019 holiday sales next week.
The AC vs PokeSmash comparison is crazy.

All I can say is Nintendo better be ramping up production. They need to be putting at least 25 million Switches on store shelves this year or there are gonna be massive shortages during the holidays. Why is Nintendo always so conservative when they have super hot systems? They said earlier this year they are only increasing production by 10% this year right? Take a page from Sony and ramp up production 50%!

Caught them off guard, they are shipping as many as they can produce, and they have to hold some back for the holiday quarter

Here have this from Shareholders Q & A, released July 3rd

Question 2:

Nintendo Switch is in short supply due to the huge success of Animal Crossing: New Horizons. I feel that Nintendo was not able to support this sudden increase in demand, which led to a major opportunity loss. Please tell us about your future plans for handling the production system, sales methods, and predictions for demand.

Answer 2:

Furukawa:

We would like to express our apologies for the inconvenience experienced by many consumers due to a shortage of Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch Lite. There have been continued on-and-off shortages throughout markets worldwide, specifically since the release of Animal Crossing: New Horizons (in March) through today. Console production has mostly recovered. However, because there is some amount of lag between when a product is manufactured and when it arrives on retailer shelves and worldwide demand for Nintendo Switch remains high, please understand that we cannot currently answer when the shortages will be resolved.

Regarding the comments about our production systems and demand predictions, we take these very seriously and are working towards improving the situation as soon as possible.

Question 5:

My understanding is that you are responding to the shortage of Nintendo Switch consoles by increasing production and holding raffle sales through the My Nintendo Store and at other retailers. However, Nintendo Switch continues to be resold at inflated prices, and I believe that merely increasing production or holding raffle sales is insufficient for supply to catch up to the sudden increase in demand. Specifically, please let us know whether you are discussing measures.

Answer 5:

Furukawa:

We would like to once again express our apologies for the inconveniences experienced by many consumers due to the shortages and reselling of Nintendo Switch consoles. Reselling is generally permitted under the current laws, so we are limited in the measures we can take as a company. We want to deliver Nintendo Switch consoles to as many consumers as possible, so we believe that the most important measure we can currently take is to steadily increase the production and shipping of Nintendo Switch consoles.

Anecdote, but the local chain store that I usually visit (GEO Hyper Media Shop) is dumping their TLOU2 Collector's Editions (the one that has the Ellie statue). 50% off less than a month from release, originally about $180USD (converted from JP yen) now half that. Maybe they take up too much space? Anyway, regular version is still normal price.

It is nice to see a same day 3rd party game sell better on the Switch for once. With a now 5m install base lead, one would expect that to be the case every time.

Still it is quite the small lead in physical sales...

There's also just a lot more to buy on Switch. Switch dominates the software sales chart every week. There's much more software competition on the Switch in Japan. For PS4 anytime a decently popular new game comes out its gonna be what everyone is buying, while on Switch you have to compete with a bunch of other games that sell well.

Switch version might get better legs. And this game is the first one for the Switch. You need to build that fanbase on the Switch. Same scenario as Persona Scramble.

But it at least got a Switch version. Like look at SAO. Completely missing out on a handheld audience which is what Japan is known for. It quite funny how some devs in Japan are still willing to make exclusives for a sinking console(PS4) and a console with 0 userbase(PS5).

At the end of the day it will be the devs that will be missing out on the $$$$$
