Age of Empires 2 Definitive Edition sits at 84, which was the most recent release.

Give me a link. I don't see it on metacritic.

Ok. Thanks. Strange that didn't show it to me.

Playground Games get the best ratings atm, but all within the same series. They're untested elsewhere, and reviewers will inevitably get weary of the same series at some point.

Obsidian seem the most reliable; high scores across the board and across multiple IPs.

Ninja Theory is the most interesting imo; more varied genres than Obsidian and willing to take more risks with any potential new IP.

I think so too. We'll see how the second Playground team will perform. Will match the first. Probably The Initiative will also do great games (though not many). And it should be remembered that many of these studies have recently expanded, and access to better tools and larger resources will allow them to create more ambitious productions.

A very valuable post.

I don't expect much after Compulsion Games and Undead Labs in the near future. Double Fine is also a great unknown, although Psychonauts 2 should be good.

I put my greatest hopes in inXile, Ninja Theory, Obsidian, The Initiative and the second team at Playground Games.

Around the Network
I decided to make a list of games currently in production (based on announcements, reports and rumors):

343 Industries
- Hello Infinite

Compulsion Games
- Unannounced game

Double Fine
- Psychonauts 2
- Unannounced game

inXile
- Wasteland 3
- AAA RPG

Mojang
- Minecraft Dungeons
- Minecraft with ray tracing

Ninja Theory
- Hellblade II
- Project Mara

Obsidian
- Grounded
- Outer Worlds DLC
- AAA RPG (speculating on Pillars in 3D)

Playground Games
- probably Forza Horizon 5
- AAA RPG (Fable?)

Rare
- Everwild
- Battletoads
- probably one more game in the planning phase

The Coalition
- probably Gears 6

The Initiative
- a high-budget action game with spy gadgets (Perfect Dark according to rumors)

Turn 10
- probably Forza Motorsport 8

Undead Labs
- probably State of Decay 3

World's Edge
- Age of Empires 3: Definitive Edition
- Age of Empires IV

Xbox Game Studios Publishing
- Flight Simulator
- Tell Me Why

Other announced exclusives games:
- The Ascent
- The Medium
- Scorn

Do you have any other types?

And what do you think about such a lineup for the next 2-3 years? What do you like and what is missing?

What is XGS?

edit: Aha, didn't know that was a thing or that those companies were part of it.

The only games I'd consider playing of those are from Obsidian. So the correct answer is Obsidian.

Truth!

Seeing inXile up there, and thinking about how "Torment: Tides of Numenera" was a letdown from the greatness that Torment planescape was.... ontop of how poorly made and buggy Wasteland 2 was (totally overrated metacritic score), I was like "okay I can live without inXile games".

But seeing Obsidian on that list actually hurts.

South Park: The Stick of Truth was awesome.
Pillars of Eternity 1 + 2 are both fantastic as well.
Havnt played Outer worlds, but that seems to have been well recieved too.

That's actually a good looking portfolio... for the most part.

If you ignore "inXile" + "Rare" + "Compulsion games" + "Undead Labs".
Their resent work leaves alot to be desired.

The "stars" are clearly:
343, Obsidian, Playground games, The Coalition and the guys makeing Ori.

About what I expected, Obsidian has the most consistent record (not counting Playground games). Obsidian is probably the most promising studio imo (Playground may be a close second or even top dog if they can nail Fable IV).
