Forums - Sony Discussion - Unreal Engine 5 Announced + PS5 Demo

I don't buy a graphics engineer would mistake a video file for an actual demo (running a video file at 40 fps is also bizarre, video files are either 24 fps, 30 fps, or rarely 60 fps). The translated version has the engineers clearly saying the SSD throughput only needs to be in the MB/sec range, not GB/sec. Why in the world would you even bother talking about that over a video file. Sweeney likely has a marketing deal with Sony and doesn't want to rock the boat on that. New AMD GPUs getting outperformed by older Nvidia GPUs in actual practise is nothing new, been happening for ages and Epic already admitted the demo will run fine on a 2070 Super. The PS5 is nothing special GPU wise.

The engineer mentions that they are targeting running that demo at 60fps but they managed to optimise it to reach 40 so far. The presentation was locked at 30, for a very logical reason. 40 fps is a stuttering fest and you don't want to reveal such a demo not running smoothly.

What people were trying to say is the engineer somehow was so stupid to claim the VIDEO FILE was running at 40 fps, lol, and not the demo period.

That is very hard to believe.

If that can run at 40 fps on a laptop using a older Turing based GPU and a garden variety SSD, it's not a great look for Sony or AMD.

Stop willfully spreading misinformation. The demo was not running on any laptop.

This was proved several times in this same thread, so please stop it. People misunderstood and thought it was running somehow on a laptop better than on a ps5, when in fact if was a video playing what was a recording of the demo running of a ps5. These same people must feel extremely embarrassed at this point for that wrong assumption.

If you want to fantasize how it would/could/should run on whatever hardware, fine, but don't treat it like there's some evidence of it even running in a pc because there isn't.

They are saying it was running on a laptop.

An engineer would have to be a fucking moron to confuse a video running on a laptop for actual performance, they are talking about the demo itself and how it ran on the laptop chipset. They got it to 40 fps and are aiming to get it higher to 60 fps.

Fact is AMD is having serious problems matching up with Nvidia, Nvidia is the bigger company with quite frankly better designers.

A 7nm AMD can't even outperform an older 12nm Nvidia GPU on 2 year old architecture.

Just stop. You have no idea how scaled down or up it was running to achieve this kind of performance on that alleged laptop, if it was. You have no idea how that demo would run on PS5 if the framerate was left uncapped. You also seemingly refuse to take into account that the engine itself wasn’t created for the PS5 only, or that PCs were of course used to develop it.

All you’re doing is spread blatant FUD for obvious reasons.

You don’t speak mandarin. You base all of this on an unreliable "source", and keep at it because said shaky translation aligns with the crap you want to spread.

Just stop. Your intentions are transparent.

Well, did you still believe it?

It was a misinterpretation of what was being shown by people that don't even speak that language. As I pointed out (with resources) it was an mp4 video being played off a laptop. It's laughable how that gets spun around to that being the performance on that said laptop. You could play the same video in a f'ckin celeron and integrated gpu laptop and would still look the same.

The more you keep spreading that FUD, more people will be confused and call it 50/50.

It's not 50/50, we have it straight from the top man himself how the demo was recorded, so just stop it. If and when they are able to run it from a laptop then you can go ahead and compare performance. As far as we know, this demo was never ever running outside of the PS5.

Funny enough I'm more excited to see what indie devs and Japanese devs do with UE5. We got a lot of them in UE4 this gen. From very anime looking games to stuff like Project Nimbus.

Instead of seeking to convince others, we can be open to changing our own minds, and seek out information that contradicts our own steadfast point of view. Maybe it’ll turn out that those who disagree with you actually have a solid grasp of the facts. There’s a slight possibility that, after all, you’re the one who’s wrong.

Epic China engineers' interview, if you know Chinese you can confirm it by yourself.

https://www.bilibili.com/video/BV1kK411W7fK

  • 53:00, he said his laptop could run the tech demo at 1440p 40fps+ in labs, optimization target is 60fps for next-gen.

  • 2:07:00, SSD bandwidth isn’t as that high as ppl said, not need a strict spec SSD (decent SSD is ok).

  • They mentioned this 2-3 times in the interview: CPU has to keep up with the data processing.

  • Someone at TGFCer forum said, the engineer just confirmed to him: RTX 2080 GPU laptop but forgot the exact SSD model, perhaps 970 EVO Plus. (http://club.tgfcer.com/thread-8307013-7-1.html 94th post)

Edited: Another guy ‘tutomos’ also translated these two parts in Resetera forum. https://www.resetera.com/threads/tim-sweeney-on-ue5-the-nanite-and-lumen-tech-powering-it-will-be-fully-supported-on-both-ps5-and-xbox-series-x-and-will-be-awesome-on-both.206223/page-9

Edited #2: Video was removed, someone said the streamer took it down by himself, UE official channel will upload it’s own version later.

Edited #3: Some warriors talked about Tim Sweeney's video player twitter, here is reference/explain, he didn’t know or misunderstood what happened in the interview talk, dodged the 1440p40 in labs fact: https://www.resetera.com/threads/tim-sweeney-on-ue5-the-nanite-and-lumen-tech-powering-it-will-be-fully-supported-on-both-ps5-and-xbox-series-x-and-will-be-awesome-on-both.206223/post-34233429

im afraid you just basing yourself on what sweeney said without questioning his interest is foolish

Foolish is hanging on to that video from china like its gospel.

It seems you linked the wrong page, respectively, you c&p without checking. There is no user named tutomos. Researching a little further, i found someone saying the resolution wasn't even specified. Everybody is assuming it's 1440p. And supposedly duplicating of assest was a trick to have the demo running, which i thought works only with mechanical drives.
