So, I was just watching some gameplay on YouTube when I noticed something unusual.

Yup, YouTube no longer seems to consider 720 as HD. Kind of a bummer, really. Especially considering some people I know don't have the internet speeds to stream YouTube's new minimum HD resolution now. Although, I guess it really doesn't matter. Are companies other than YouTube also considering 720p as standard definition? I haven't bought a new TV in a while, so i'm not sure if HD TV's are doing this as well. Is this the new norm?

This is all news to me. I feel like i've been living under a rock, since I still consider 720p to be a great resolution for movies and gaming.

A crappy game will suck no matter how many pixels it has.

So yes 720p is a viable gaming resolution.

On our 5.0mbps dsl, we can't have two computers running YouTube at 1080p at the same time ever. Our devices aren't junk either. If someone is watching YouTube at 1080p during non peak hours, another computer can be 480p without buffering. During peak hours we can't even get 1080p and 720p is the best, with a second computer being at 360p. Streaming to a TV is terrible. 720p best case scenario non peak, 360p with buffering during peak, and don't bother trying YouTube on another device if you're streaming to a TV. If someone is watching YouTube at 720p during peak, and I'm gaming online, the lag becomes unbearable.

Kinda feels like being fed scraps at times. Thankfully we can download some of what we'd otherwise stream all night for free in 1080p. Gotta stream YouTube though.

PS5   - ^ -We must build a console that’s a generational cross product, with RT lighting, and price hiking.

PRO  -&- We must build a console that Super Res upscales and continues the cost increases.

Switch gets a pass for being a handheld.
Otherwise no.

No game on PS5 or XSX, would run 720p.
So by todays standards (2020), it really isnt a viable resolution for gameing.

720p, imo, is the minimum HD setting. But, I guess times change and standards change and the "standard definition" changes as well.

Absolutely it's viable, 720p still looks just fine to me.

480i is standard right...   Because I have a 200 dollar 480p GC component cable that says there is a difference between 480i and 480p.  I can barely notice any difference though.

720p is still the same amount of pixels it was yesterday, no matter what kind of tag gets put on it.

...
Though I guess we can’t really call the HD-Twins the HD-Twins anymore can we.

"HD" is just an advertising name, it's not important.

1440P isn't HD either. It's Quad-High Definition or sometimes referred to as 2k.
