This is the most pathetic attempt at a coup since the tyrant Cylon of Athens.

I'll say. Trying to pull off a coup through courts that you yourself stuffed with Republican Judges only for those same judges to deny you. Truly pathetic. Instead of just admiring dictators Trump should've actually learned how they pull it off in their countries.

I fear the coup attempt is only coming - but not from Trump himself, but from his sycophants barring Biden access to the White House when he's supposed to move in in January, and threatening to open fire...

To be fair that may not be the worst thing.

I mean, that would be a pretty massive thing in terms of finally getting better gun control laws in the US. If it weren't to happen after something like that then it won't ever happen.

If nothing happened after Sandy Hook, I think it's safe to say nothing will be big enough to for the US to get better gun control.

To an outsider, Trump's armed supporters don't seem organized enough to pull off a coup successfully. If an armed group tries a coup without military support (or at least silent consent), the chances don't seem that high to me. An armed coup could definitely create a bit of chaos, but I doubt it would be dangerous to American democracy. Now if a 'leftist' coup attempt were to occur, that might be a different story...

To me, Trump's attempts to legally challenge the outcome of the election seem far more dangerous. It's not that honest handling of the situation could really change anything; It's faking evidence to a sufficient degree that could be problematic, and it doesn't seem like a completely impossible situation either. I don't think it's particularly likely, but Trump isn't exactly all that predictable either. For all I know, he could be trying all the legal routes before trying something more extreme. Then again, I haven't exactly got a decisive impression of him either when it comes to things that actually matter... But perhaps as a European, I don't have such a good vision about everything Trump has done.

The problem I see is that Trump is using the legal actions not to buy time, but to rally his base by sending a message of him being denied of his "victory" by every which way possible. Considering that during the pro-Trump protest in front of the White House some persons had signs on them that even made Fox news hosts cut away in shock and gasp, the leaders of the biggest militias saying that they won't accept the election results if Biden becomes president, and Trump supporters using increasingly aggressive tactics, I could really see them wanting to protect "their" president with guns and their lives from getting ousted from the White House.

This would be an extremely hard nut to crack for Biden: He can't call in the army to fight off (and more importantly, fire upon) american citizens without making himself look really bad and having the blood of several Americans on his hands. On the other hand, he can't just let Trump squat the White House past his supposed end of presidency without making MAGAs look like they're in the right (which they totally aren't, but it's all about looks and impression with Trump, not acts).

So Senator Graham's attempt to get Georgia's Secretary of State to throw out all ballots from counties with "relatively high" rates of rejected absentee ballots ran afoul of a bunch of state laws. But since he's a Republican (and rich, and white*), nothing will happen :D

*Compare what happened to a black woman in the state: "In 2012, a GOP district attorney charged Olivia Pearson, a Black woman, with voter fraud after she helped someone use a voting machine. She was acquitted after two trials, avoiding a five-year prison sentence. In October, she was arrested again for trying to help someone else cast their vote." To say nothing of the black Texas woman who is in prison for voting while on parole when nobody told her it was illegal. But if you're an old white lady from Nevada who voted by mail for Trump and then tried to vote for him again in person, nothing will happen to you! Sigh.

Recount finished and Biden officially confirmed in Georgia. Please let this all be over soon...

It's over. It has been since Nov. 6. You guys need to get a life.

Tell that to GOP election officials. I do expect Biden to be in the White House come January, but I'm not relaxing until he is.

I get what you mean, I'm operating under the same assumptions. Watchin the GOP flailing though have not been good for my stress levels. The thought that Trump is going to try his best to court my state's (Michigan) republican dominated legislature to forego the people's vote is truly terrifying. In some ways I think it would be healthier for me if I tried to ignore it until January but that also feels like how these kind of actions might actually succeed.

...

I don't really have any anxiety about the GOP stealing the election or damaging democracy. I just have the exact same anxiety I have had for over a decade that there are so many incompetent, sociopathic and corrupt people openly in US politics without anyone doing anything about it. They're giving dangerous people a platform. A sociopath with a microphone is much more dangerous than a sociopath with lawyers. And the US sure loves to give out microphones to sociopaths as if they were automatic rifles.
