The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) had already put in place “enhanced” screening for travellers crossing at land, rail or ferry on March 5 — for instance, referring those who recently travelled to Iran or who are ill for additional screening.

The CBSA refused to confirm it is reviewing policies regarding land border crossings, referring questions to the Public Health Agency of Canada. The health authority did not respond to specific questions. A spokesperson for Public Safety Minister Bill Blair, who is responsible for CBSA, did not immediately provide comment.

But in a morning press conference Wednesday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau acknowledged that with hundreds of thousands of people crossing the border every day, the U.S. is “a real potential vector of transmission.”

“We continue to engage extremely regularly with our counterparts in the United States to ensure that we are handling as best we can the spread of this virus,” Trudeau told reporters in the National Press Theatre.

“We will continue to monitor, to co-ordinate to ensure that what we are doing has as minimal impact both on Canadians’ health but also on the growth of our economy (as possible).”

So basically nothing... They are watching the news, good job! not.

Woman was 52. Arrived in Guyana from New York on March 5. Visited the public hospital on March 10. She suffered from hypertension and diabetes, very common in our country. Died the evening of March 10.

I see it more of a test for what may come in the future. Its kinda crazy how ill-prepared we always seem to be when it comes to these outbreaks.

I guess it's the same in other countries, but really this things should be fix first worry about the cost later.

As the Liberal government announced $1 billion to battle coronavirus, Health Minister Patty Hajdu said COVID-19 could ultimately infect between 30 and 70 per cent of Canadians.

“It is probably a virus that has hit the sweet spot. It isn’t completely lethal, so there are people with mild illness and a range of clinical symptoms that can transmit the virus,” she said. “Viruses always have surprises, which is why we have to keep monitoring it.”

In question period, Conservative health critic Matt Jeneroux asked why the government wasn’t mandating people coming back from high-risk countries like China, South Korea, Italy or Iran to stay in quarantine.

“The government has the ability under the Quarantine Act to require all individuals who have visited high-risk areas to be placed in quarantine. When will they use it?”

Hajdu said they’re using the border to inform people about risks and connect them to important information. She said closing borders or mandating quarantine might feel like a good response, but the science doesn’t support that approach.

I wonder what science says that stopping to import the virus doesn't help...


Next week is March break, then strikes (unless they forgot about them) or possibly corona school closures. 2 more days of schools for my kids. I wonder what the world looks like in 12 days.

So all the Private and Public universities closed in person classes for the rest of the semester in NY State.

Well when one country is making most of certain medical supplies for the entire world, it could be a disaster when that country is hit with an outbreak. We have managed threats over time. Its never just stomped out early. We never seem to see these things coming. Its never a matter of IF, its always a matter of WHEN. Yet we still act like theres never been one before. Im not very worried about the corona virus, but god help us all when a really bad virus is unleashed upon us.
