I was massively against Brexit but I never tought of pathogens and borders. Maybe they had the right idea for the long term, as the EU's economy is crumbling around us, they'll be sitting pretty with closed boarders. The rate of which it is spreading within Europe, across countries is frightening. I hope the EU parliament has plans for eventualities like this because this isn't good for the future, it'll turn thenmajority of the population to nationalism if (when) shit hits the fan.

Well, with the transition period in place, not much has really changed on a practical level yet.

And it could also turn the other way: Imagine not being able to get enough medical supplies in case of an outbreak because they're needed on the continent first...

UK and Ireland aren't and weren't part of the Schengen area so they never had open borders with mainland European countries.

I live in Ireland, I can go almost anywhere in Europe without a visa, stay work and return home anytime I want. Same goes for people on the continent coming here, they've already taken advantage of it since '03 and returned home, mainly Polish people but plenty from the country around that area. That's pretty damn open to me and migrants, both economic and Asylum seekers were and have been placed here from all over the world, not just the EU in the last 20 years. If mainland European countries are more open than Ireland,  I can't imagine it.

The difference is, you have to pass border control every single time you enter the Schengen area. Only then are you allowed to move freely within it (you're also profitting from it), while most EU citizen only need to do that when moving outside the Schengen area.

All I'm saying is that nothing changed. They were able to close borders and check every single individual getting into the country before and they can still do it.

While people now may not work in the UK as easily or permanently live there, they can still do it in Ireland or simply visit the UK as tourists.

We should have shut the borders a week ago so we could keep our internal economies going instead of playing these stupid cat and mouse games. For what? Business trips and weekend holidays?

Nov 2016 - NES outsells PS1 (JP)

Don't Play Stationary 4 ever. Switch!

Just wow

If you’re confused by the fact that President Trump keeps saying that the coronavirus is nothing to worry about while officials who actually deal with infectious diseases keep warning of a potential public health crisis, don’t worry. Now that Vice President Pence has taken over the coronavirus task force, he’s making sure the flow of information will be curtailed.
If I had not watched the conference live myself I would have thought this article to be grossly exaggerating as usual, it's all true.

At least China also puts walls around infected cities, not just around information...

Considering they wouldn't say if the vaccine was affordable for everyone - yeah I'm guessing that is exactly what they want. Chaos to blame on "socialism". Chaos as a reason to postpone the elections.  Chaos as a reason to prevent people from voting (by shutting down areas etc).

Chaos to spread as fake news.

don't worry, this is exactly why the 2nd amendment exists and the 2nd amendment ppl would totally overthrow the gov .. not

Only a matter of time until we got "orange man bad" from the people who support open borders. If T starts blocking people from non-white countries they will call him racists, guaranteed.

Crazy how the situation has worsen over the last few days.

My bet with The_Liquid_Laser: I think the Switch won't surpass the PS2 as the best selling system of all time. If it does, I'll play a game of a list that The_Liquid_Laser will provide, I will have to play it for 50 hours or complete it, whatever comes first.

No one ever suggested open boarders. That's an unsubstantiated talking point.
And you're equating restricting entry from virus infected areas to restrictions based on ethnicity?

You're reaching here just to pick a fight with people over things no one said.
And it's not the first time you've done this.

When Trump restricted travel from China some weeks ago, most of the press couldn't remind as fast enough how racist travel restrictions really are. A small sample:

Yes, most Dems and many Reps support de facto open borders (even if they avoid the term) by legalizing "illegal crossings". Even left-wing writers couldn't find a difference to "open borders" with the example of Warren's plan (which is quite representative).

https://www.motherjones.com/kevin-drum/2019/07/are-democrats-now-the-party-of-open-borders/

I have previously criticized Republicans who accused liberals of wanting “open borders.” President Trump tweets about this endlessly. But I have to admit that it’s hard to see much daylight between Warren’s plan and de facto open borders.

People need to stop believing the hype of the Corona Virus, the media has blow this out of proportion. The recent losses on the share market are just a correction and there is no need to panic. The media over hype of Corona Virus is creating worry, panic, fear and anxiety. Stay calm, just ignore the hype, business as usual.

Except if the virus catches you.

Beyond that, there's nothing wrong in showing concern for those affected, for one thing.
