I don't understand this obsession with games being "new IPs"

1st) Some of the best-acclaimed games out there are not "new IP" (BoTW, FH4, RDR2, Witcher 3, God of War, GTA V, MK8, Halo 3, TLoU2, just to name a few examples)

2nd) There have been plenty of examples of new IPs not that well received (ReCore, Ryse, Days Gone, Order 1886, etc, etc, etc)

3rd) There are plenty of games out there that are "new IP" just in name, but when you look at their gameplay, they are blatant copies of other IPs.

It’s a PS fan narrative from what I see. Classic way to play down the PD reveal. Despite the irony that most of their big games next year are all sequels...

I'm actually kind of surprised by how few views the Perfect Dark trailer is getting. Adding up the Xbox Youtube posting of the trailer, and the most viewed repostings on Youtube, I'm getting about 860k views after nearly 48 hours. I would have expected alot more views than that. Afterall, the original Perfect Dark sold 2.5m copies on N64, and it has probably been played by at least 500k more than that since then between the 360 remaster and Rare Replay. By comparison, the Hellblade 2 trailer last year got over 3m views across the 2 official postings and the top repostings in a similar timeframe (48 hours). Sure the Hellblade 2 trailer was just all around much better reveal trailer (in-engine with killer graphics, good music), but still, Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice only sold 1m at last official count (probably closer to 2m by now), Perfect Dark sold more copies.

On a side note, David Jaffe, the creator of Twisted Metal and God of War, decided to get dressed in clown make-up and say that Perfect Dark is already in trouble:

He is getting alot of dislikes on that video. He has some good points though, especially about Joanna's redesign looking too much like Jesse Faden from Control. I really hope they rethink he design before the gameplay reveal. I also agree with him that it wasn't the best reveal trailer, had I been watching it live I wouldn't have even realized it was for Perfect Dark until the end when the camera pans up on Joanna.

I just finished Control and I absolutely did not even come close to thinking of Jesse Faden when watching the PF reveal trailer.  Since PF is first person, it would seem moot to compare a TPS character to a FPS game and say they are the same.  Most reveal trailers do not really show anything they just tease something.  You never expect to much of anything besides something is getting made and it will be within a particular setting.  Until we see some actual gameplay is when people get a little more hyped about the project.

As a side note, after playing Control, I can say that its not a bad comparison if the game is around that type of gameplay.  I enjoyed the game a lot and probably one of my favorite games where you have a list of powers and ability.  The story wasn't bad at all and probably one of the few I actually took the time to read all those stupid case files.

Almost completely forgot about this. As always, I haven't played as many games from the current year, so I'll probably miss some big games. Will update it eventually.

The streaming wars are going to begin this gen, EA knows that they need more content for EA Play and that’s why they are expanding and bringing back the EA Originals program. It going to all be about content and how much own, I believe that Embracer Group knows this as well since they have enough studios and games to launch their own Gamepass-Like service.

I just hope that some Publishers team up to make a streaming bundle like Disney does with Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+. At least we are already seeing something similar with Gamepass + EA Play.

Tencent just finalised their acquisition of Leyou too (Splash Damage, Certain Affinity, Digital Extremes) and I think they're working on their own streaming service too. There's no way Embracer Group isn't either going to create a Game Pass competitor or sell out Imho.

Nah  Douyu and Huya are the streaming services and Tencent basically owns them, they have around 300 million users so don't think Tencent creates a new one considering those two will merge soon.

If Google or Amazon actually got serious about gaming then Embracer Group would be the one company to buy.

God I hate Tencent so much, they only seem interested in making GaaS games. They are the one company that actually scared of because of how much they own, I’m  afraid that they will start buying Japanese Game companies and turning them to shit. You guys already saw the direction they took with Epic Games when they bought a majority stake in them.

As long as tencent games keep releasing games on xbox I don't care much.

But MS needs to move and get a few jp studios before them, that's for sure.

Got a feeling once the Bethesda deal closes we will hear of another acquisition in the summer.

I see no point in waiting to announce new studios, just say you bought SEGA and Asobo and be done with it..

I would love both of those acquisitions xD

Doubt Sega is one they already acquired though, publicly traded, we would have heard something by now. Maybe in the future, sure would be a smart acquisition, would give them a really nice foothold in Japan and with western fans of Japanese games. I do hope they have acquired something Japanese already.

Despite Phil’s comments on it I really believe the Bloomberg article isn’t fake, there is no way that they would make up fake sources or claims like that when they were the 1st ones to break the Zenimax-MS deal.

They 100% are looking into Japanese studios, let’s just hope that they are acquisitions that will make some noise.

So, the past few years Xbox has revived quite a few IPs such as Age of Empires, Flight Simulator, Fable and Perfect Dark, Phil was serious when he said he delved into their Xbox IP portfolio to see what IPs they can revive.

I'm happy, there's quite a few great Xbox IPs which Xbox have killed off simply for not being Halo, now with Game Pass the sales don't matter as much, it makes me more optimistic for other IPs.

So, two questions, what IP do you think will be revived next and what IP do you personally want to be revived next?

Revivals so far:
* Mechwarrior.
* Perfect Dark.
* Fable.
* Age of Empires.
* Flight Simulator.

So based on that... I would like to see:
* Mech Commander.
* Mech Assault.
* Freelancer.
* Starlancer.
* Alan Wake.
* Blue Dragon.
* Conker.
* Viva Pinata.
* Crimson Skies.
* Lost Oddysey.
* Infinite Undiscovery.
* Impossible Creatures.
* Black and White.
* Kameo.
* Age of Mythology.
* Phantom Dust.

Not sure if Microsoft actually owns those I.Ps', but I know they published them... But I would love to see their revivals.

Ironically I thought Black and White would have been the absolute perfect game to showcase what Kinect could do as you are essentially the "Hand of God" which could have leveraged the Kinects motion controls. - Black and White actually had motion controls before the Wii with the Essential Reality P5 Glove accessory and it worked well, so it could have been an extension of that.
