There are so many fairly popular JP series still missing on Xbox: Persona/SMT, Atelier, Guilty Gear, BlazBlue, Senran Kagura, Legend of Heroes, Ys, Disgaea, Nioh, Yokai Watch, Inazuma Eleven, Neptunia, God Eater, Ni No Kuni, Granblue, Sakura Wars, Bravely, Mana, Akiba's Trip, and more. And now we have these rumors that Sony may have hatted Silent Hill and Street Fighter away from Xbox as well. The whole thing is very frustrating to watch. While Phil and his team are making progress in Japan, that progress has been way too slow. It has taken Phil like 7 years to win over approximately 10 noteworthy JP series, and they still have like 20 to go. There is definitely something to be said for the Peter Moore method of winning over Japan compared to the Phil method, Peter's strategy of just throwing money at JP devs to get 2nd and 3rd party JP exclusives seemed to work alot faster than Phil's method of flying to Japan a few times a year and touring studios to slowly nurture relationships. I really wish Phil would combine the two methods. |
I don't think it's about doing better in JPN (which would of course help), but rather expansion into Asia (which Xbox, to my knowledge, isn't really doing - but please correct me on this). The JPN market is never going to grow again for consoles unless you're a hybrid like the Switch. Asia was the market that Sony expanded more into last gen, and JPN devs followed with Chinese translations for example. Also, it is really money hatting if Konami is putting up their licenses to other studios to take? MS could easily get the SH license and have a game made. It sure sounds like Blooper Team are making a SH title, and maybe Sony/ Kojima. Peter's strategy also didn't really work out in the long-term. I wonder if the Scalebound cancellation has played a role. Hard to say. I think Phil is throwing money: games like Yakuza coming to Gamepass are not being done out of some long established relationship (especially when the next gen update for the latest Yakuza was timed exclusive to Xbox). It's quite likely that trying to buy exclusives just isn't working. As good as the money is, studios also need to weigh what effect exclusivity will have on the IP in the future. MS seems to have a good working relationship with Namco: they seem like the company to target. Maybe get an exclusive Ridge Racer or Klonoa made? It's tough, because I think I agree that it seems like the fruits of Phil's efforts are not as large as you'd expect. Or maybe he's put effort into new studios, so stuff could be on the horizon. |
