             Knights of the Old Republic

PC

2003

I love KotOR for so many reasons! The battle system is so close to DnD that min/maxing matters a lot, making for a deep customization system. The story and worldbuilding is one of the few examples of post 80's Star Wars done right. New takes on the Star Wars franchise often completely miss the mark. KotOR has the classic Jedi vs Sith story, and the gadgets that look used. The world of KotOR looks lived in. The locales are just as interesting as Hoth, Bespin, or Dagobah. The same seedy underworld element is there. These things are all missing from the prequel trilogy or the new movies, or most post 80's Star Wars media in general. Then there's the ability to play as the bad guy! I have to admit that I've never beated KotOR as a good guy. I've always, always been evil! It's just so fun, and HK47 is hilarious everytime I replay through this game! Bioware's habit of letting the player be as good or evil as they want was groundbreaking at the time, and to be honest it's still great fun.

40. Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep

First Played: 2010

Times Completed: 3

A fun handheld Kingdom Hearts game which overhauls the battle system, allowing a fairly complex setup of commands in battle. It features three new characters with three different paths through the story, before the final chapter unlocks. Obviously this game is an important part of the ongoing and perpetually confusing KH plot, but since I’m already invested in the madness, this isn’t a bad thing. Technically impressive for a PSP game and it even holds up well enough on modern consoles with the KH Collections.

The next batch of clues

38. A mechanic and a robot save the galaxy from corporate greed.

37. The subtitle has a second meaning, to increase your weapon collection, but the intended interpretation is a bit too vulgar for the UK market.

36. One who knows nothing, understands nothing.

Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door

GameCube

2004

This is the best of all the Mario RPG games. That includes all of the AlphaDream games, the Square Enix game, and the regular Paper Mario games. Why is it so good? For starters it has a wonderful cast of interesting characters. You'd think the Mushroom Kingdom would be full of mostly nothing but Toads. Nope. We've got a booksmart Goomba, a timid Koopa, and a newly hatched Yoshi, as well as other interesting and colorful characters, in Mario's RPG party. All of these characters have goals of their own, and personalities of their own.

The game's pacing is excellent. I never felt like the game was stalling for time with it's battles. Like Chrono Trigger, Paper Mario TTYD has just enough enemy encounters to keep you interested without overstaying its welcome. The battle system is also fantastic since you can hit buttons during battle to increase damage.

39.  Well I never played Majora's Mask, but I am vaguely familiar with the game concept.

There ya go.

43.  Adventure
guessed by S.Peelman

Zelda may very well be my favorite franchise, but even before Zelda, there was Adventure.  Even with the primitive capabilities of the Atari 2600, Warren Robinett was able to construct a game with swords, dragons, exploration, and many items.  All of this set you on a quest to get the holy grail (or golden chalice, same thing).  I still get this game out and play it from time to time.  The thing that fascinates me the most is that this game is built with a randomizer.  No two games are exactly the same when you use it.  It potentially has infinite replayability.  I have dreams that Nintendo will remaster Zelda 1 with a really good randomizer.  Until that happens Adventure will always have this one unique ability that I can’t get in another fantasy action-adventure game.

42.  The Sims
guessed by S.Peelman

At first glance The Sims seems like nothing special.  It’s about relatively normal life.  However, there is actually something to that.  How much control do you actually have over your normal life?  The Sims lets you live out the fantasy of trying to achieve the life that you’ve always wanted.  It could be wealth or relationships, career, or whatever.  The Sims is actually something of a huge wish fulfillment game.  And if you are willing to put in the time, then you can basically build your own neighborhood.  You work to build your ideal life while overcoming challenges along the way: make friends, get married, advance your career and so on.  Or you can just irritate and eventually kill your Sims if you want.  The game is kind of what you want to make of it.  I’ve never played any of the sequels, but the original is so innovative and fun that it has to make my top 50 games of all time.

41.  The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
guessed by S.Peelman

This game is the reason I bought a SNES.  Sure, I bought it launch and played Super Mario World, but it was in huge anticipation of Link to the Past, and the game did not disappoint at all.  First of all, while I loved Zelda 2, I really missed the open world exploration aspect from the original.  Link to the Past returns to form, but ups the ante in so many ways: better graphics, bigger world, more items, etc….  The game even messes with you somewhat in that you think after completing the first 3 dungeons that you are about to beat the game.  The reality is that Link to the Past was so much bigger than the first 2 Zeldas, and they even brought in the Dark World to make the overworld feel twice as big.  What a great mechanic!  What a great game!
