43. Adventure

Zelda may very well be my favorite franchise, but even before Zelda, there was Adventure. Even with the primitive capabilities of the Atari 2600, Warren Robinett was able to construct a game with swords, dragons, exploration, and many items. All of this set you on a quest to get the holy grail (or golden chalice, same thing). I still get this game out and play it from time to time. The thing that fascinates me the most is that this game is built with a randomizer. No two games are exactly the same when you use it. It potentially has infinite replayability. I have dreams that Nintendo will remaster Zelda 1 with a really good randomizer. Until that happens Adventure will always have this one unique ability that I can’t get in another fantasy action-adventure game.
42. The Sims

At first glance The Sims seems like nothing special. It’s about relatively normal life. However, there is actually something to that. How much control do you actually have over your normal life? The Sims lets you live out the fantasy of trying to achieve the life that you’ve always wanted. It could be wealth or relationships, career, or whatever. The Sims is actually something of a huge wish fulfillment game. And if you are willing to put in the time, then you can basically build your own neighborhood. You work to build your ideal life while overcoming challenges along the way: make friends, get married, advance your career and so on. Or you can just irritate and eventually kill your Sims if you want. The game is kind of what you want to make of it. I’ve never played any of the sequels, but the original is so innovative and fun that it has to make my top 50 games of all time.
41. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

This game is the reason I bought a SNES. Sure, I bought it launch and played Super Mario World, but it was in huge anticipation of Link to the Past, and the game did not disappoint at all. First of all, while I loved Zelda 2, I really missed the open world exploration aspect from the original. Link to the Past returns to form, but ups the ante in so many ways: better graphics, bigger world, more items, etc…. The game even messes with you somewhat in that you think after completing the first 3 dungeons that you are about to beat the game. The reality is that Link to the Past was so much bigger than the first 2 Zeldas, and they even brought in the Dark World to make the overworld feel twice as big. What a great mechanic! What a great game!
