Forums - Gaming Discussion - Best last gen (console) graphics 2005-2008

When we talk about the best looking games of last gen, pretty much every example is from the later years of it; which is only natural as engines and tools improved over time and devs got better at extracting maximum performance and visual payoff from the hardware.

But what about the early years of Gen 7? What game(s) from 2005-2008 look the best in your opinion, and what about them impresses you?

Metal Gear Solid 4. Gears Of War 2. Oblivion. Those are some of my picks on the run.

From what I've played, Dead Space comes to my mind.

Call of Duty 4.
Uncharted
Ninja Gaiden II

That's a tricky one, because early 7th gen games have aged pretty horribly in general.

I'd say Crysis and Burnout Paradise.

Bet with Intrinsic:

The Switch will outsell 3DS (based on VGchartz numbers), according to me, while Intrinsic thinks the opposite will hold true. One month avatar control for the loser's avatar.

Pretty sure Crysis didn't come to consoles until long after 2008. :P

This is 2005-2008 and some of these games are as late as 2013 (AC IV)

And a heap are Gamecube/Wii games... And they weren't ever graphically intensive titles.

***********

Xbox 360:
Halo 3.
Fable 2.
Gears of War 2.

PC:
Crysis: Warhead. (Best graphics of any game ever up to that point.)
GTA IV.
Mass Effect.

PS3:
Little Big Planet.
Metal Gear Solid 4.
Resistance 2.

Wii:
Mario Kart Wii.
Super Smash Brothers Brawl.
De Blob.
I must reinforce that visually the Wii fell short of the 7th gen platforms, the consoles visual output falls inline with the 6th gen platforms... But listed three games that looked okay for that platform specifically.

Realism is dull to me overall so I look more at a style perspective. Some of the best looking games that had a realistic look to me aged as well as milk left out on a hot summer day. So they impressed me with their style and still hold up today. Realism to me is about the most overused and dull aesthetic in gaming. So I mainly listed games I thought had a lot of style. Also, I did not list a single Gamecube game.
