Heh,the 1st time I finished Xenogears I was like "WTF I didn´t understand half of the plot"...then,over time I came to understand it.....really deep and interesting.

| Ajax said: hold on a minute pretty lame? so you are calling Xenogears, Final Fantasy Tactics, Suikoden en Final Fantasy VII lame.. compared to like FFVI, Lufia II and Chrono Trigger and FFIV? you got to be joking man you can say your taste is more with the SNES rpgs but those PSX line-up is certainly not lame |
I do like more about the "SNES-style" RPG:s, and the only reason i mentioned the whole thing was to point out that the "killer RPG-lineup" depends a lot from the person judging the lineup. Besides, usually when asked, SNES RPG-lineup is considered the best ever, and the reason for this is pretty clear, since at that time RPG:s used to be gameplay driven.

oh nonsense
'cause
1. If I say the PSX has got a killer RPG line-up,
does that also mean that I say the SNES doesn't have a killer RPG line-up?
no,
I was talking about the PSX
2. you say ''SNES RPG-lineup is considered the best ever''..
by who? by your friends, or by all those wise ign and gamespot editers? or by Famistu en Dengeki, or by the developers and publishers?
There is no consensus about that. Look at Famistu's all time top 100.
3. then you say even the most strange thing
''the reason for this is pretty clear, since at that time RPG:s used to be gameplay driven.''
hold up
here you're making a mistake many people make
they think that because other factors came in to a game
that means that the gameplay must suffer
but that's not true
true gameplay and great grafix CAN coexist
besides
a rpg is also about telling a story
and no SNES rpg does even come close to Xenogears,
and didn't the cinematics in FFVII actually have a possitive effect on the experience
the grafix and artdesign of Midgar for instance or the world map
or the Gold Saucer, or the face of Sephiroth turning into the flames, and the death of Aeris,
or would the game be better if it had SNES grafix?
you really sound like a conservative who doesn´t want to see that design and grafix can help a game
and don´t mean that the gameplay will be lost or suffer
on the contrary
grafix where already important for Square on the SNES
just look at Chrono Trigger
Square really did their best there on the design
but that´s no problem for you
but in the case of FFVII it all of a sudden is
''Hadouken!''
you know what a rpg is that was about grafix and lost it´s gameplay?
The Legend of Dragoon..
''Hadouken!''

I really only played Mario 64 that generation, and other quality 64 games. I decided to stick with the SNES and Gameboy mostly, because that generation lacked quality outside of the 64. I will always remember the PS1 as the console that started all of this cool guy hype over gameplay BS that lead to consoles like the Wii and PS2. |
What on earth is wrong with PS2? There can't be one gamer on this planet that hates PS2, since it has games for absolutely anyone (except if you ONLY play Mario, Halo and Zelda).
N64 had the best games (maybe ever) but it was unfortunate that it had only 5 of them. PS1 had loads of cool games, I only discovered those during the PS2 era. Too bad that PS1 games have aged very bad. Probably worst of any console ever. I'd love to replay RE2 + 3 but I just can't get over the graphics.
| dib8rman said: err, seems you guys forgot price point. I had both PSX and N64 however I had a bit more PSX games mainly due to the $49.99 over $70+ price of the cart games. When it came to fun factor though, both were fun or had fun games - but yea the PSX didn't start shovel ware, it was there, it's just that it reinvigorated the graphic whore community, which are the loudest of gamers apparantly. The effect of CGI XD. Consoles were for home gaming, now their home multimedia devices, who knows now if this is the direction it was supposed to go in. If Nintendo & Sega had stayed dominant or Sony didn't drag their other markets into one market I wonder where gaming would be today. BTW: The common misconception is that Nintendo monopolized gaming, truth is they secured it from crashing again, plus Sega was doing the same thing, within the boarders of the past, what they did ensured we had console gaming today. But it's easier to blame the winner huh... |
No that was around from the Atari days. I can still remember that shitty ass E.T. game on the 2600.
@ BengaBenga
I hated the Ps2 for a while. I was mad I went through 3 of them and they all broke. The last one broke right when I was getting into GTA Vice City. Damn Sony for that! I'm over it now though and the PS3 is way more reliable.

Love the product, not the company. They love your money, not you.

1. No. As i said, it was just a comparision between the two, without saying anything about the quality of RPG:s of each console, outside the comparision. 2. Actually, most people who have played the games on both seem to think so. 3. No. I just base my judgement on how things actually happened. Focus from gameplay went to story and playing the parts between the story, instead of playing the story. This is a general trend in nearly all genres, but it's just something that you have to accept if you want to play games these days. Great gameplay and great graphics can coexist, if someone is willing to make games which implements both. It's just that as long as media is cheap, it's a lot cheaper to make videos instead of optimising gameplay. I do know that FF7 was a quality game, but i personally didn't like it much (played it on PC). And no, it's not because of it's videos, which were impressive. As what it comes to story, my favourite Square game, Secret of Mana (FF spinoff), carried the story really well through the game, while being graphically not so impressive, even by the platforms standards. Better graphics and lots of videos would have made the game visually more impressive, but the gameplay wouldn't have been so "continous" as it was.
