Forums - Sony - RUMOR: Sony in discussions to aquire Take-Two Interactive

Yeah, don’t see this being real.

It’s too much money, and whatever money Sony would potentially end up paying, why wouldn’t MS/Apple/Google swoop in and offer a lot more? Especially since two of them are apparently about to try to break into the console space. What better way to sell your Google gaming box than exclusive GTA6?

Also this seems like a shit deal for TT. Tons of their games rely on recurring revenue with the GaaS model. Cutting out large portions of their sales isn’t something only felt with the sales numbers but also a massive drop in recurring revenue. Also what changes would be made to their dev cycle if a company bought them out? You think any of the four listed would continue to be ok with 1 GTA or 1 Borderlands or 1 Red Dead per generation?

Sony couldnt afford it anyways. Playstation was the only thing keeping them afloat just a few years ago, no way they'd make that big a purchase.

Sony can afford it and this will exactly reinforce your point,PlayStation is whats Sony's biggest product nowadays and they need a big exclusive like GTA to fend off competition

It's going to take almost all the money Sony have to buy Take 2. It isn't happening

I know many of you see this as a potential detriment to multiplatform gaming but If it happened I don't see Sony pulling the plug on TT being an agnostic studio. I think their smartest move would be to use the GTA and 2k license to detente with MS and Google on their owned IPs. Especially if MS/Google buys a company like EA.

Sony:"If you keep Minecraft and sports titles multiplatform, we will keep GTA and 2k open as well"

Like it's been stated before, it's far more valuable to keep them multiplatform. Especially if it means any sales on the games and micros lead to more money in the bank.  They could still incentivise the games on PlayStation with perks but not forsake multiplatform status.

Greatness Awaits

PSN:Forevercloud (looking for Soul Sacrifice Partners!!!)

Not gonna happen, the games they make are highly profitable as multiplat, tying to one platform will reduce a lot the money, so Sony would pay to much and reduce the return.

Confirmed not happening. Lock this one up.

Why would Sony say otherwise if they are still in negotiation phase.

Not sure if it's true or not.  Would be the gaming equivalent of the recent Disney/Fox merger if true.

Of course, with all of the buzz around Microsoft and Google lately, I wouldn't be surprised if Sony wanted to make some big move to defend itself.  I can imagine it now.  The Sony executives come to CEO Yoshida and say, "Google is coming out with a new console and Microsoft is doubling down on a new streaming service.  What are we going to do?"

Yoshida replies, "We need GTA as an exclusive again.  Buy Take-Two if you have to!"

"Yes sir!"

I highly doubt it would happen but I would love if it did especially with MS becoming very aggressive with acquisitions. I could see Sony paying 14BN but I can't see Take Two selling for that. Surely someone like MS, Tencent, Google or Apple would pay 50BN for them.

You are correct, T2 would not sale no where close to market cap, you can believe if such a deal were to happen it would not even be 14BN.  I would easily say 20BN or more.  When you are not in the market to sell, you set your own price not the purchaser.  If they meet your sky high price thats when things get very interesting.

Nah MS is becoming a third party studio so it won't happen.

yeah but they could still buy other gaming publisher to add to their catalog

I didn't think about that.

Do you guys think that games like GTA would lose a lot of sales if they were exclusive to PlayStation? I have my doubts...
Sincerely, considering the dominant position of the playstation and the gigantic popularity of GTA, I sincerely think that the number of copies of the game would not suffer much impact. I mean, something like 66% already
play GTA on ps4 and most of the remaining 33% would simply buy a playstation to play ...
I believe that GTA playstation exclusive would have sales level lower but still close to "GTA" multiplat, at least 85%, and playstation/PC GTA can sell over 90% of "normal sales".

Type Grand Theft Auto into the search bar at your top right and sort the results by Total Sales.  4 of the Top 10 entries are on Xbox systems, which account for 35% of those sales (not 15%).  Just on straight software, that's like what $2.28 billion in sales?  It might not be as large as the chunk they get from Sony, but that's still a massive chunk to part with.

Very interesting. If true, this would be an absolutely incredible statement from Sony. This would be a PS2 era type move if true. Bioshock, Borderlands, Grand Theft Auto, NBA 2K, and Red Dead, among others, exclusive to PlayStation Hardware and PlayStation Now would drive the steak in their market leadership deep into the ground.

If this turns out true, color me extremely impressed with Sony.

Weren't you saying just yesterday that they were doomed because they weren't adapting your Playstation OS across all devices model you think they need to survive? And that exclusive games alone won't save them from a future of games being streamed to people, and now you're impressed with their acquisitions of a third party that would bolster their first party lineup?

Shouldn't you be annoyed that they're spending their capital acquiring game studios instead of bolstering their game services? You can't seem to make up your mind.

So your saying, I can not adjust my position based on new information?

I don't believe Sony can continue the same success they have right now without making changes. Although I consider their current exclusives to be the greatest achievements in gaming today, I do not believe they have the selling power to sustain Sony's current success by themselves.

When you add Grand Theft Auto, NBA 2K, and Red Dead that makes a massive impact on the selling power that Sony's exclusives would have. Adding them changes the equation, it would be ignorant not to rethink my views based on this rumor.

It would make no sense to be mad over this. This purchase would add a lot of value to PS5 and PS Now, which would in turn allow them to expand their OS and Network to a larger audience. A move like this is exactly the kind of thing they need to maintain/grow their ecosystem.

There is more than one path to success. Offering greater value by expanding their hardware offerings is one. A giant increase in exclusive content is another. I would prefer to see them make better hardware and service that people buy into naturally, because they are the best in the industry, but sometimes in business you have to play a rougher game to move ahead/stay on top.

I would never be mad at Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo, Apple, Google, or any other company for making big moves. The only time I get irritated is when I see companies making Billions in profits, laying people off, and not do anything to improve themselves or their industry their industry.
