You summed it up quite well despite your TL;DR version not being deserving of its name. I only want to add something to the point I left in the quote. The approach of doing a few key moderations is going to work because the majority of users adapts to the level of discourse that is on display.

I know that the word count is massive, but I tend to approach such things by addressing possibly arising questions right away, so it's bound to happen that people who consider something self-explanatory have to read something that is redundant for them. Examples of such concerns are freedom of speech and worries about getting moderated for being wrong.

Yeah it still ended up being long, but I did a word count on mine and yours and I'm not kidding I reduced it by 61% by my calculations. Figured people would be more likely to at least try to read it when reduced and put in a bulleted form. I feel like the bits on being moderated for being wrong and freedom of speech are really only useful to people who will be disingenuous in any argument they make and aren't worth accounting for the opinions of anyway.

As someone who over the course of my time here has dedicated very little time to posting in political discussions or creating threads I'd agree that dedicated threads are the way to go. An official trump thread, an official elections thread covering all nations etc etc.

As someone who can debate politics peacefully without resorting to unpleasantries I welcome improvements in this area. Maybe I'll start posting more on the topic if improvements are made.

I had a thought regarding the moderation side of things. The board is dominated by two very different political ideologies...the left and the right. Very few posters fit in the middle (and even then the middle is subjective depending on who you ask and from what country). I figure it might be a good idea to take 2 mods (either currently existing or new) from both sides that are capable of being objective despite the subjective nature of the discussions. This will ensure more balance and less accusations of one side having greater mod influence.

Of course if you can get a couple of good centrists to take on the job, all the better.

I am a centrist here, but probably fall to the left-wing equivalent side of the political divide in the USA.

However... From a moderation standpoint, you don't generally care about the points being presented, you care about the delivery and the individual behavior of an individual, so it makes very little difference if a moderator is left or right wing.

Plus before we moderate anyone, anywhere on this forum we discuss it first so as to sidestep the bias issue entirely.

While I do not think this website should solely be restricted to discussion surrounding video games, discussion surrounding politics on this sort of forum typically only leads to circular arguments that do not go anywhere.

There are plenty of other forum topics that would still be applicable should politics be cast aside. Such as: Music, movies, tv, pop culture etc.
This should be a platform for entertainment.

That being said, discussions based on video game politics, such as censorship and video games being used as scapegoats should still be permitted. As it is still relevant to the topic as a whole. There is no need for the 1 millionth Trump and/or religious debate.

Instead of seeking to convince others, we can be open to changing our own minds, and seek out information that contradicts our own steadfast point of view. Maybe it’ll turn out that those who disagree with you actually have a solid grasp of the facts. There’s a slight possibility that, after all, you’re the one who’s wrong.

That is on topic, seeing as its exactly like the polarising of two groups of people who never agree

What's the difference between the 3? Is the left nationalist ideals and the right more Liberal that promotes diversity? So the centrist is a combination of the two?

A Centrist is someone who sits between the left and the right and will go with whatever policy ultimately makes sense or has the most scientific backing.
I.E. I am a big supporter of climate change because of the undeniable scientific evidence. (Left-wing)
But I am also a big supporter of border control and limiting immigrants for security and job reasons. (Right-wing)

Generally, my political views are far more moderate than what the left or right propose... And I would thus be against any dramatic shifts to the left or right in the political space or on any particular issue.
And you wouldn't be above pointing out the hypocrisy of either the left or right in any of their dealings/positions... Like making various connections to historical events/political figures in order to provide an example. (I.E Stalin, Hitler, Fidel Castro and so on.)

I probably don't need to point out the differences between the left vs right though. :P

In short, the left are Progressive, Equality-promoting and tend to lean towards Socialism/Socialist ideas.
Where-as the Right are Conservative, Stronger religious/traditional leanings and tend to lean towards Capitalism/Capitalistic ideas more often than not.

There is obviously more to it than that... But hopefully you get the gist.

Also worthy to mention is that some countries are a step over to the left or right... For instance... The Center-Right here in Australia is probably Center-left equivalent in the USA, the USA is a step over to the right compared to here and most European derived nations for that matter.

Basically any modern functioning democratic society will need both the left and the right, they are two sides of a coin, both with different perspectives, arguments and ideas... And it's always healthy to debate those views.
The majority actually reside somewhere near the center who generally vote with whoever offers the most compelling argument for the betterment of all, ideally anyway... And hopefully that can happen in our political forums rather than people whinging about the left or the right, but take a more balanced view and give credit where credit is due.

Thanks.

Yeah I'm definitely in the centre with a sprinkling of extremer views from each side. And when it comes to voting I don't vote by left or right. I vote by who I think will do more for my needs and the needs of my area. So I've voted for members of all parties.
