A Centrist is someone who sits between the left and the right and will go with whatever policy ultimately makes sense or has the most scientific backing.
I.E. I am a big supporter of climate change because of the undeniable scientific evidence. (Left-wing)
But I am also a big supporter of border control and limiting immigrants for security and job reasons. (Right-wing)
Generally, my political views are far more moderate than what the left or right propose... And I would thus be against any dramatic shifts to the left or right in the political space or on any particular issue.
And you wouldn't be above pointing out the hypocrisy of either the left or right in any of their dealings/positions... Like making various connections to historical events/political figures in order to provide an example. (I.E Stalin, Hitler, Fidel Castro and so on.)
I probably don't need to point out the differences between the left vs right though. :P
In short, the left are Progressive, Equality-promoting and tend to lean towards Socialism/Socialist ideas.
Where-as the Right are Conservative, Stronger religious/traditional leanings and tend to lean towards Capitalism/Capitalistic ideas more often than not.
There is obviously more to it than that... But hopefully you get the gist.
Also worthy to mention is that some countries are a step over to the left or right... For instance... The Center-Right here in Australia is probably Center-left equivalent in the USA, the USA is a step over to the right compared to here and most European derived nations for that matter.
Basically any modern functioning democratic society will need both the left and the right, they are two sides of a coin, both with different perspectives, arguments and ideas... And it's always healthy to debate those views.
The majority actually reside somewhere near the center who generally vote with whoever offers the most compelling argument for the betterment of all, ideally anyway.

Yeah I'm definitely in the centre with a sprinkling of extremer views from each side. And when it comes to voting I don't vote by left or right. I vote by who I think will do more for my needs and the needs of my area. So I've voted for members of all parties.
