Its almost like you're being obtuse on purpose. How do you not understand the difference between: a) reticles, that are purely cosmetic items that wont serve any purpose in combat. The game plays fairly as there is no way to get a competive advantage by buying purely cosmetic reticles. b) starting with your fists and having to buy guns. This would be pay to win and will unfairly favour the person who paid for gun, having a better chance to win against the people will bare hands. Though nice try trying to move goalposts. The two arent nearly the same thing. |
The paid horse armor in Oblivion isn't nearly as problematic as publishers charging extra money for disc-locked content, cutting stuff out only to sell it back later as DLC, season passes that cost almost as much as the base game, loot boxes or even selling DLC for DLC (yes, that's now a thing), etc. either. Doesn't mean it didn't eventually get to that point because of people letting Bethesda get away with the paid horse armor crap. Notice how all that sleazy monetization we see today conveniently happened after Bethesda had the testicular fortitude to sell HORSE ARMOR in Oblivion and has gotten worse and worse with every passing year since, hmm.
You know what else is sleazier than selling $1 reticles? Selling $10 save slots, but alas, that happened already:
And some people STILL defended them with no thought or care in the world for the consequences. In a world where publishers charge you $10 just to start a new game with a second character, I wouldn't put anything past them. So maybe we shouldn't be supporting/defending companies who sell you basic features that every other game gives you for free for OBVIOUS reasons (cut the "entitlement" crap), not even for $1. Other Joe said it himself, not even a dollar for a second save slot.
This is the correct mindset to have. Otherwise, it won't be long before companies start selling you ammo, just like how we went from expansions to this:
EDIT: it's not just me ripping Activi$ion for selling something you can get for free in as far back as Half-Life 1, either:
