Pretty sure Nintendo cares about profits more than unit sales.

Yep! That is like saying the PS3 is a failure because it did not beat PS2.

And lets not forget. The 3DS needed a price cut early in its life.

It wouldn't mean that it's a failure. But Nintendo merged its handheld with its home console, so it could be disappointing for them if the result was lower than the handheld alone.

In my opinion, that's what should happen when we watch the trajectories of handheld market and mobile market (first one is falling as hard as the second one is raising), but I guess Nintendo viewed the hybrid as a way to grow, not just fall slower.

Anyway, the Switch has very strong sales so far, we'll see how high it will go!

But Switch is $300, way more expensive than 3ds

Yeah, it is not like Switch is $300 and 3ds at this point is $170 only

They do. Just like Sony do. It's why this is Sony's best gen ever.

@Curl

I know what you're saying and I agree I'm just pointing out the above conversation was in relation to Japan only and it makes sense since this is a Japan thread. Not saying WW can't be brought in but it makes sense if conversations generally revolve around just Japan.

Smash Bros is doing better in Japan than I expected. It's only the third week and its total has already passed every other game on the chart other than Splatoon 2.

If their goal when they released the ps3 was to sell more then the PS2 then yes it was a failure using that metric. And I'm sure they did want to outsell it.

Likewise I'm sure the goal with the ps4 was to outsell the ps3 in Japan. Likewise I'm sure Nintendo would like the Switch to outsell the 3ds since it's replacing it and the Wii U.

Yeah, just like Sony would like the vita to outsell the psp when it came out.

And it can sell below 3DS in Japan and still be a huge success, it will likely sell over 20 million and crack the top 5 best selling gaming systems of all time, it would be foolish to not consider that a success.

When the herd loses its way, the shepard must kill the bull that leads them astray.

I get that. Just saying, if Switch doesn't sell as much in Japan as 3DS lifetime, that doesn't mean it's not a success. As Portis says, it's about profits, and Nintendo are making way more money off Switch selling $60 software for a $300 system than they were selling $40 software for a $170 system with 3DS.

Ultimately, I think whether Switch can topple 3DS lifetime in Japan depends on how long Nintendo support it. The 3DS has been dragged out for a crazy long time by keeping it around as a dirt cheap entry level system, if Nintendo does the same for Switch in 2023 and beyond, the sky's the limit.

Just like the point I was making, yes I'm sure Sony hoped the Vita would outsell the PSP.

How are Nintendo's profits this gen compared to others?

Switch first 2 years are more profitable than 3ds whole life. Japan or WW. Switch can stop at 40mil WW and its already more successful. We just use previous numbers for HW as a benchmark
