Forums - Nintendo Discussion - How Crash Team Racing beat Mario Kart at its own game

Indeed, Naughty Dog is easily the most diverse developer out their. They’ve created critically acclaimed blockbusters in so many different genres it boggles the mind that they’re all from one developer.

Compared to Mario Kart 64? I wouldn't doubt it. Never played either but Crash's game has far more impressive graphics for the time, and a story mode to go with it. Plus wasn't the idea of collecting fruit to improve your kart whilst racing used in Mario Kart later on with coins?

That being said compared to Mario Kart of today? Most likely not, MK8 simply has a lot of cool iconic characters to race with whereas Crash has ... well ... Crash characters.

The way the video is framed, yes, in comparison to Mario Kart 64. Like morenoingrato correctly noted, that wasn't a high bar.

Super Mario Kart in 1992 used coins to improve the performance of the vehicles during the race. Diddy Kong Racing in 1997 had a story mode and upgradable items during the race. If someone wanted a kart racing game that was based entirely on skill, then DKR was the game to go in the fifth generation, because its items were known to the player instead of being randomized.

Nowadays Mario Kart is a massive game in terms of roster and tracks, and comes with options to set the amount of items, so the whole argument of CTR being less casual falls flat on its face. Likewise, a remake of a 20 year old game won't stand a chance against Mario Kart 8 Deluxe in any category, not even in "PlayStation has a game that Switch has not."

The whole video is a nostalgia-fueled pro-PlayStation opinion. It cherry-picks what's convenient to support the opinion, but most of what is being said isn't even worth refuting. Chances are that the same guy would make a video about DKR to say that it was too much based on skill in order to say that CTR felt just right.

Legend11 correctly predicted that GTA IV (360+PS3) would outsell SSBB. I was wrong.

There's some groups that just seem to have the midas touch, at least for a while. Blizzard Entertainment up through the mid 2000's comes to mind, where they seemed to create the definitive game of multiple genres each time they released a new title lol, and Rare had that insane run that included shooters, platformers, and kart racers that were all superb.

Can't think of many others outside of Nintendo itself that really compare at the moment with Naughty Dog's versatility, though I'm sure there's some I'm forgetting.

This was naughty dogs first ever attempt at a racing game and they absolutely nailed it. CTR is still the greatest kart racer of all time. It's a diddy kong racing clone but it surpasses it in every single way. The tracks are much more memorable and the carts control so well. DKR and MK64 wished they could control this well

lol, don't know how I forgot about the coins in Mario Kart SNES. I do remember someone saying that Crash team racing introduced something that Mario Kart later adopted, can't remember what though.

Yeah, the video is awkward indeed.

Never played Crash kart racing, so i cant say either way, but I will say this:
Its good that Mario Kart dosent have monopoly.Even if Nintendo always strives for quality, a little competition is always good to keep everyone on their toes.

My (locked) thread about how difficulty should be a decision for the developers, not the gamers.

Not sure how Blizzard is setup, but It’s not the same with Nintendo though, they’re basically multiple dev teams under one name. It’s like comparing Sony Worldwide Studios with CD PR.

I loved my time with CTR as a kid, being over my cousins house. And this looks great...but it's no Mario Kart in my opinion. I love the theme, music, and overall whimsicality of the Mario Kart series more, especially 8 as it has become my favorite in the series. And for me personally, MK8 controls like a dream. They finally got it right, if CTR remake can improve upon these controls for me, that remains to be seen but I'm open to a kart racer being better than MK. Especially with modes.

It didn't though. It was a good game, no doubt. However Mario Kart has always/is still in a league of its own when it comes to kart racers. I mean the very fact that people are trying to dethrone it is proof of that.

Cheap Mario kart rip-off at best. Pointless weapons nobody even knows. Meanwhile MK has iconic weapons. So much so that Crash straight up copied them. Even down to different uses. I have a feeling this opinion/review was moneyhatted. Yes i have played the game. I thought it was crap, the controls were crap and the weapons were pointless ripoffs. Not fit to tie MK's shoes imo and that's MK64 i'm talking about. Probably my favourite game of all time.
