Forums - Gaming - What do you think of RDR2 so far? (for those who are playing it)

I just started the game on Sunday night, and have only a few hours in it. It has not yet pulled me in. I am very disappointed with the clearly terrible HDR implementation, at least on PS4 Pro. With that said, after hearing the complaints about slow movement and clunky controls, I think I had the bar set so low in my mind that the game has exceeded it in those areas. So, that's a good sign. Unfortunately, if a game doesn't pull me in within the first few play sessions, I generally don't finish it. So, we've got another day or two for it to grab me. I certainly hope it does. I was very much looking forward to the game, and I am holding out hope that it will turn out to be to my liking.

its real eye candy on the xb1x. really enjoying it so far, just did the 2nd train heist mission, still in chapter 2 though and done alot, getting alot of gameplay value out of it, my only complaint is sometimes get a wanted level and not sure what happened to get one? i was passing a carriage in town and i dont think i ran into anyone while on my horse, but got a wanted level for something? just paid the $25, i spend more money on bounties than anything else so far though, trying to play the good guy. first time through anyways.

It doesn't really matter what you do, however playing the good guy is more profitable in the long run. Crime doesn't pay in this game. In my crime spree play through I was racking up the bounties and lost $150 on death each time. Pretty much ending over $2000 less than my good play through.

HDR only makes the picture look worse, best to turn it off. The game grabbed me as soon as I had the freedom to go explore. You need to push through to the first camp near Valentine to unlock freedom. Although you might want to do a few more missions to get some equipment.

Don't even get me worked on it... how many times my hunting material vanished from the horse... besides the obnoxious difference for bull and ox leather (not even going to put cow together)... Bulls and Ox are the same besides the castration.

Is there a limit to how many pelts you can stow on the horse? It only displays 2 yet keeps letting me stack more on it. I always loose the big pelts and birds as they fall off when the horse trips over something or runs into a tree. When I get over run by wolves it all disappears anyway. With trappers and butchers so far away hunting isn't very practical. At least you keep the stuff in your inventory, except after a few kills it already starts nagging that you can't harvest everything. It sucks losing that perfect pelt you've been looking for for an hour.

For those that are not experiencing the "issues" with the controls, I think it's because to those people it's not a problem. Especially those that are used to playing Rockstar games before this one. GTAV controls very much the same, with regards to the input delay with movement in general. If you are walking forwards and you try to switch direction, it takes a second or two to turn around. Part of it is because the character animations need to play out, but I think there is more to it than that.

There is certainly some delay between the animation even starting. Maybe it's because the animations are so complex that there are only a few frames that can transition into other animations, and when you input a direction on the joystick you need to wait until the animation reaches a point where it can transition.

I played the game for probably 80 hours or more, and it was one of the greatest gaming experiences of recent memory, even despite the controls being bad. This isn't really the type of game that relies on good controls in order to function proper.

I think I have put over 6 pelts on the horse... but the vanishing thing also happens when you enter some optional missions that don't even use the horse. Other times the corpse itself just disappear without anything noticeable happening.

Yeah, I turned it off.  But, I spent money to get a TV with decent HDR capabilities last fall.  A major AAA game (RDR may actually be more like a AAAA game, budget-wise) these days should be making good use of that tech, not requiring me to turn it off for the game to look good.  I think it's a pretty major screw up by Rockstar.

I hope they can improve it with a patch yet I fear that since the game was 5 years in development the engine runs in 8 bit color. It does have fake HDR when going inside outside so the lighting engine i capable of delivering a higher range. Yet I guess all the intermediate buffers before post process effects are clipped at 8 bit. It's a shame, RDR2's starry nights and bright skies would look phenomenal with proper HDR. As well as the light of an oncoming train through the fog at night. It could have been the poster child for HDR. Lightning would have a lot bigger impact in HDR. At least I can make timelapse videos without worrying about the conversion to SDR!

This game with proper controls and proper HDR would be too good! Got to leave something to improve upon :)

It isn't even a poor implementation of HDR. They are basically lying when saying there is HDR. It's really a SDR signal labeled as HDR and that makes the tv interpretation go haywire.

90 percent of the people who will finish the story have already done so, release the online already, dammit. Crush BF V and Fallout 76 in the first days of their launch but give darksiders 3 and Just cause the room they deserve the weeks after! Be the heroes we want rockstar.

Not in a hurry, still want to complete the strangers and the challenges, been playing for over 110hrs now, new events still popping up.
