While the "women" controversy definitely had some effect on pre-orders, it has more to do with the culmination of other things. First, people lost their confidence in EA, especially after last year's Battlefront fisco. Unless we have it on paper, at the moment, no one really knows what kind of paid BS they're gonna push this year. Second, we haven't seen BFV open beta yet. Third, we already had WW2 FPS game last year. Fourth, when the producer of the game tells you that if you don't like the game, don't buy it, you will have quite a lot of customers who will do just that, purely because of this stupid comment.
If EA guarantees no pay to win in this installment, the open beta turns out to be very good AND the game offers something fundamentally different from last CoD, we will see a different picture in terms of figures. At the moment people take "wait and see" approach, including me.
