Yeah I knew a hardcore gamer that killed themselves, so no it doesnt beat anything. This is pseudo science junk and dangerous for those with real depression.

Have you honestly grasped what a horrible thing it is you just said? |
Saying that games beat depression is dangerous. Treatment helps beat depressiob. Games can temporarily treat symptoms only and often in unhealthy ways long term
As someone who has struggled with depressions and played a lot of games, I wonder if gaming has overall been a help or a hindrance. I know that's not exactly the focus of the video, but it's something I've wondered for a while.

They didn't say it was a replacement for pharmaceuticals, just that it worked for patients who happened to be avid gamers. |
It might help dull symptoms as a form of mental escapism, but I've known people that ended up losing jobs and relationships because they began escaping for 10-16 hours a day in to games. And I'm not sure that many of those with severe depression have the self control to keep their gaming habits to what we might call moderation. Obviously people with depression can find some solice in gaming, but when you have video titled how games can "beta" depression, well thats just wrong. games will not solve the underlying issue of depression, ever.

You're only saying that because you're cynical, and totally downplaying what Boogie said at the end of the video. If that's how you feel, then you might as well look right at other patients who've curbed depression through gaming and tell them there's no hope for any of them. |
He's talking more about anxiety in his case at the end. That's fine. Depression is a different beast altogether. Carrying a Nintendo Ds with you isn't going to help you treat your depression, period. It might help temporarily ease symptoms, but I'm skeptical of that being healthy either in the long term, as many with depression will use gaming to escape from dealing with their depression to begin with.

There you go again, talking like there's no hope for these people. Why do you keep bashing something that they find comforting in dark times? |
What are you talking about? There is hope - that hope is getting proper TREATMENT. CBT therapy, pharmaceutical therapy, etc. That's actual hope. You cant Chrono Trigger your way out of depression.
Depends on the person, excessive gaming can become more of a hindrance to depression/anxiety. It's an escape, and can be a way of avoiding problems rather than fixing them.

I knew a person under pharmaceutical therapy who killed themselves. What you're saying is dangerous.

Not everyone has the same way of getting out of depression and anxiety. |
Which is why I'm making fun of him for being pedantic and contrarian for no real reason. Hobbies can be very helpful to people suffering under depression.
Games also cure acne and hemorrhoids
Deus Ex (2000) - a game that pushes the boundaries of what the video game medium is capable of to a degree unmatched to this very day.
