Forums - Gaming Discussion - A VR Survey

1) I've use the PSVR, tried the space flying demo and the driving demo. I really, really didn't like having to wear something on my face.

2) Not really, but it was fun to try. I played a lot of 3DS with the 3D turned on, and VR is basically the same thing but enclosed and with a much, much better fidelity.

3) It could be, but it has some hurdles to overcome. The set-up is far too much for most people. They need to be lighter, smaller, wireless and have a lot less extra tracking stuff to set up around the room. The PSVR was definitely better than the others in that last regard, since I believe it only needs the camera? I might be wrong.

4) VR's problem is that the exclusive games for it are short, gimmicky tech demos, and the great games that can be played in VR (like Resident Evil 7) can also be played without VR. If people can play the game without VR just fine, then there's no reason to get a VR headset, even if it is more immersive. VR needs some real exclusive games that are great and can ONLY be played in VR.

1.) Have you used VR? If yes, what headsets have you used? What did you like and dislike about it?
Yes, I've used Oculus, Samsung VR, PSVR and HTC Vive. Main issue for me is the bulk and it is rather uncomfortable to use with glasses. I can't blame them too much for the last problem but it is an issue for me personally. I really enjoy the experience and overall it is very immersive.

2.) Are you interested in VR? Why or why not?
Hmh. If there is ever a chance to demo it, I'm always down, but I can't see myself being a frequent user. It isn't comfortable enough.

3.) Do you think VR will be popular in the future? Why or why not?
I'm not sure if it will be a household item like a TV or a computer, but at this rate it can find a niche at worst, and be a good addition to gaming at best. Companies need to market it and price it correctly so it doesn't go the way of 3D.

4.) What games do you want for VR? What games would make you buy a VR headset?
I don't really have a wishlist for it. Maybe the next Metroid? Personally I'm not a huge fan of first person games so that is also a detriment.
Personally, I don't think there's anything that could make me justify the purchase of a VR set.

So long story short, I love the tech behind it, I think it is super cool and I wish companies success in it (especially HTC) but it isn't something I see myself using for extended periods.

1.) I currently own a PSVR and an Oculus Go. The PSVR is great for gaming as it makes you feel like you're "in the world". In a well made game, it really is convincing.

The Oculus Go is several generations behind in power and isn't nearly as immersive when it comes to gaming but it's a media beast and much easier to "pick up and play".

2.) I've always been interested in VR, 3D, motion controls, and things of that nature. I guess I'm a fan of innovation even though some may call them gimmicks.

3.) While there will always be a place for 2D gaming, you just can't beat the escape that VR provides. With the right software, I believe a lot of people will be convinced. VR may not be THE future but it's definitely A future and current software is just scratching the surface. After trying the Anne Frank VR experience, I wouldn't be surprised to see it used in schools.

4.) For the mainstream, a Call of Duty VR would be a game changer.

I also think it would be great if the PS4 and Xbox One (or some future console) could stream content to a wireless headset at high resolutions. As great as the PSVR is, the wires are intimidating. I'd even like to see the return of Kinect or an equivalent in some form so that we don't even need a controller.

1.) Have you used VR? If yes, what headsets have you used? What did you like and dislike about it?

Yes, I have a PSVR. The increased level of immersion provided by VR is exciting and seems like it *should* have some staying power if Sony, Facebook and HTC can overcome the drawbacks. The biggest problems and shortcomings with the medium (coming from PSVR) are: the low-resolution headset screen, nausea-inducing gameplay on many games, and the numerous heavy cords hanging from the headset. So far, Batman Arkham VR was one of the more interesting games to me -- Doom VR got me excited too although I have mixed feelings about Bethesda's teleport-to-move gameplay. Thumper is good in VR. Skyrim, not so much for me.

2.) Are you interested in VR? Why or why not?

VR has real potential but I do not see VR becoming my preference at this time due to the drawbacks mentioned above.

3.) Do you think VR will be popular in the future? Why or why not?

Too early to tell. In the long term, especially as high-resolution displays (TVs) continue to fall in price, I am skeptical that users in general will migrate to gaming on a low-resolution peripheral beyond the novelty experience. Again, I think those three shortcomings listed above are dealbreakers and all will have to be fixed for VR to live on.

4.) What games do you want for VR? What games would make you buy a VR headset?

I'm curious about Farpoint and Moss.

I'm a huge VR fan and I'm very curious to know what people think about VR.

So if some wouldn't mind answering these questions:

1.) Have you used VR? If yes, what headsets have you used? What did you like and dislike about it?

2.) Are you interested in VR? Why or why not?

3.) Do you think VR will be popular in the future? Why or why not?

4.) What games do you want for VR? What games would make you buy a VR headset?

1) I've used Gear VR, Rift, Vive, PSVR, and Rift DK2

2) I am very much interested in your virtual reality. As a gamer in the 90s, I recall Sega claiming for a couple of years that it was just around the corner. Since that time,   I've been waiting patiently for good quality VR.   I think that, in theory, it can fundamentally change the way that people play video games. Of course, it also has many potential uses Beyond gaming.

3) I am less confident in the future popularity of virtual reality at this point than I was a few years ago. It turns out that it's great to think about, but has a lot of practical limitations. I still believe that it will be a significant part of gaming in the future. But, I don't know that it will ever be mainstream, at least not in the foreseeable future.

4)  I can't think of any particular games that I want to see, or that would make me open my wallet. However, I am very much interested in seeing virtual reality role playing games, especially western style action RPGs.

I think it's going to take some major investment from one of the hardware manufacturers in the software space. I had hoped that Sony wood give us some big-budget, AAA, virtual reality Games. The fact that they have not done so is worrisome. It means to me that they don't have faith in their ability to move headsets even with great games.

The fact that Microsoft was touting Scorpio as a VR capable machine, but then dropped that marketing, also worries me. It tells me that Microsoft, with their massive research and forecasting budgets, shows that they know VR just isn't ready for primetime.

I think it's pretty obvious that it's going to take amazing games to push sales of the hardware. But, no third-party developer can reasonably justify investing the many millions of dollars it takes to make a triple A game when the potential sales base is so low. It is going to have to be a first party saying, and the fact that Sony hasn't done it says a lot to me.

1.) Have you used VR? If yes, what headsets have you used? What did you like and dislike about it?

Yes, I've used PSVR and overall I like it. The things I dislike are things that should improve in time such as resolution, tracking, selection of games but I don't think any of these are particularly bad at the moment anyway. I suppose comfort is an issue too but usually only when using it for extended periods.

2.) Are you interested in VR? Why or why not?

Yes, I'm very interested because it's an entirely new way of experiencing games. Playing something like Wipeout in VR is a totally different experience to playing it normally. I think that VR is also still in it's infancy and expect there is still a huge amount to come, maybe even more when VR and AR are mixed effectively but I haven't tried anything like that.

3.) Do you think VR will be popular in the future? Why or why not?

I'm not sure how popular it will become but I think it is going to become a sustainable branch of gaming. In my experience talking to friends, the perceived lack of quality software is the main reason why more interested people don't own a VR headset yet and part of that is really the level of tech we have, so these go hand in hand and when these improve, so will VR popularity. Obviously some people will never accept it, others will take more time and I'm not sure if it could rival current "flat" gaming since it's an extra step of complexity but I don't think it even needs too. There is a market and one that I can only see growing but I'm not so optimistic as to say it will become the dominant way to play games.

4.) What games do you want for VR? What games would make you buy a VR headset?

FPS and racing are the first that come to mind as they've had the biggest impact on me so far, I wasn't even that interested in these genres before trying them in VR but I get a real thrill from feeling more connected to the game. Physically pointing a gun and looking around in a more natural, intuitive way completely changes an FPS and the feeling of playing Wipeout in VR is something else, the speed feels more real, the handling feels better, actually the handling is better, I race much better in VR. I've also enjoyed more puzzle type games like Moss that I never even thought would suit VR so I think there is room for almost any genre to gain something from VR. I'm not saying every game would benefit, some are just fine remaining outside VR, but I think just about any genre could gain something new by taking VR seriously.

1.) Have you used VR? If yes, what headsets have you used? What did you like and dislike about it?
I used the Vive, My step bro has the full set up and a shit ton of games. he runs it off a 1070. I like that the headset has the full support of Valve behind it, and therefore exclusive games for it. The controller is awesome, but I hate the low fidelity. You can barely read small letters in game like in Raw Data when you want to know how much ammo is in your weapon, you can't because it is too pix-elated.

2.) Are you interested in VR? Why or why not?

Very interested, I will consider a Vive pro set up in its own designated room sometime soon.

3.) Do you think VR will be popular in the future? Why or why not?
Once it's cheaper it will catch on. PSVR is already pretty popular, but not as good as the Vive. For VR to catch on the bigger more beefy headsets will need to get cheaper, not just PSVR.

4.) What games do you want for VR? What games would make you buy a VR headset?
If Microsoft never abandoned their efforts into VR I would of loved a Forza Horizon/Motorsport VR mode. Would make me buy one instantly alongside a OneX. Racing games are simply the best when in VR.

1.) Have you used VR? If yes, what headsets have you used? What did you like and dislike about it?

So far I only used it with GearVR and Oculus Go. I tried a few games at the start but it's mainly just there for porn. The screendoor effect, low res and the awful low FOW are a big turnoff but that's something that can and will be improved in the future. So I'll wait.

2.) Are you interested in VR? Why or why not?

I like to immerse myself in open worlds and VR will help with that as soon as VR is ready and a game like that exists.

3.) Do you think VR will be popular in the future? Why or why not?

It will never reach mainstream use, neither for entertainment, nor for business. Convenience trumps every other positive aspect that VR can deliver so it's in the design itself. Unless they find a convenient way to perfectly beam the image directly into your eyes with high resolution and clarity as well as natural FOV(no AR) then it might become something but we're probably at least a decade away from that.

4.) What games do you want for VR? What games would make you buy a VR headset?

A good open world rpg that does not just have token gameplay to show off VR tech. So basically Skyrim, but good.
