Different things matter to different people. Example MGS2 many people were upset cause they had to play as raiden most of the game. playing as a character you really like, can relate too, and think is bad ass is huge part of gaming for some people. |
Yes, but why are you so offended about it? Why does it require a boycott of ND? They'll make another game with a male protagonist, I promise. Besides, if I can appreciate male, female, black, white, etc. characters, why can't you? If you need a male, or a white person, there's plenty of games like that. This is nothing to get upset about. And I know SJWs get upset too. I remember when an SJW told me they wouldn't play Metroid because Samus wasn't trans. That's stupid. Boycotting games because some mundane fact about a character like their sex, race, or sexuality doesn't match up to your real world expectations is silly. There will be more games that match your identity if identity politics matters that much to you. But it shouldn't.

You should care.... If you watch a youtube video which is sponsored by a group who want to get their message out to people that video will have a disclaimer in the description which mentions that the video is either being funded by or influenced by a 3rd party as they have to disclose that they are a mouthpiece for something. If the creators of a story you are invited to play through have "an agenda" it should be something that people care about, say this was reversed 100% and they had an agenda in the game to deliberately make female characters in the game appear weaker or stupid, or not a male/female thing but if there was a racial agenda not directly spoken of, but clearly shown throughout the story by way of making a certain race appear inferior to others in intellect and strength. Would the same "who cares if the creators had an agenda" idea apply? |
Just look at ghost busters, and keep saying who cares.

Indeed Rick, there's a fantastic video which goes through the actual manipulation of what went on with the comments / dislikes about that movie by Red Letter Media, really worth a watch but should point out those guys are a bit crass.

edit - Should point out, I'm not 100% sure if you are speaking about Ghostbusters as a movie which was impacted by those dislikes the video got... if that is the case I would even more advise you watch the RLM video

I wasn't offended till i started watching the agenda videos. i was pretty sure joel would be a playable character, but looking at the videos, its looking like naughty wants to get rid of their well loved established male characters for female leads just to push there agenda, even uncharted 5 is hinted to do the same.

You seem to be concerned that identity politics is going to take over gaming, but what I'm trying to get at is that all the identity politics game designers have done is increase the gamer audience, not promoted black nationalism, race nationalism, male or female chauvinism, or the like. If an agenda promotes something like that, or something with real world consequences, maybe I'd be concerned, but when the "agenda" is just "let's make a game with a girl in it that kicks ass!" I just can't be arsed.

Well I'm not worried. I can kind of relate to you though. I don't want them to get rid of well loved male characters. I know I've seen that in the past done in other situations and thought it was dumb. I don't really want anything from game developers beyond more good games though. If they really did commit to never making male characters on principle, I would be upset, but it really seems to me to just be a push to make more female characters, not less male ones. So long as the game is good, I'm happy to see what new character they made, regardless of demographic status they have. If you want to control the demographics of your character in every game, you have to only play games with character creation, like Skyrim. Otherwise, you have to live with what characters they create. It's one thing to want more of a certain kind of character, it's another to demand that other kinds of characters NOT be made. That's my issue with both sides of the aisle. With this particular instance, I just don't think ND is insisting no males, just more females.
