Maybe they will offer PS4 and Xbox One cloud versions of PS5/XB2 games for people who have fast internet and aren't ready to invest into the new consoles yet.

Doesn't even have to be current gen systems when next gen systems release. Just grab a crap ass laptop or a smart TV and cloud gaming should just magically work. PS5/XB2 on cloud could work as far back as PS3 or 360 ...

And if people think Nintendo are immune to this then they are in for a rude awakening since cloud makes it far easier for them to achieve console tier experiences on the go and that's been their MO since the Switch released so cloud gaming as a future resonates even more with Nintendo's goals ...

Cloud gaming would be death for a handheld. Even if it had a 4G plan like the early Vita models, to stream that constantly over cloud. Can you imagine how much data that would take? And signal strengths can vary greatly depending on where you are in a building.

Vita had 3G, not 4G.

Next year 5G will start in many areas... with the improvements streaming could work fine on handhelds and other mobile devices.

The future is cloud and streaming deal with it, PlayStation , Xbox and even PC games will be about streaming especially when moor laws is at it's peak. Many GPU will be more expensive to produce on future and an online cloud gaming server is redundant and likely will be the backbone of cheaper concept for gaming. It seems imposible for now or even another 10 years , but i can see PS7 or Xbox 4 will be fully cloud.

I know how I'll deal with it. By never buying those consoles.

The problem is , it's not just consoles, all gaming platform including PC , Arcade, Mobile phones , handled will be a cloud service in the future (probably in 20 to 30 years from now)

Exactly this with 5G technology being standardized ... (even 4G is competent enough for streaming purposes and there are mobile data service providers out there that have plans for unlimited data too)

And in Nintendo's most important markets (US & Japan) has a 90+% regional coverage too so being always connected is closer to a future they want ...

Screw the cloud.

First, I'm not sure why people are assuming that a business model offered in the small nation of Japan would be used with the rest of the world. It just isn't feasible in the near future. Why would they make a game knowing that most of the people elsewhere would be unable to play it? That makes no sense.

However, it is a peek at the future, which means they'll continue to experiment with it, as will everyone else.

The difference is that the public of nintendo accepts that everything and defends with life what comes out on the platform. Hardly a consumer of sony, microsoft or pc would accept, for example, buy cardboard at 70 dollars.
Capcom did what it did for the weakest hardware and brand. Microsoft tried to impose restrictions on the beginning of xbox one and it cost the defeat in the gene in front of ps4. Ps Now is a failure, just to cite a close example.Consumers of these brands are less open to such impositions.

You know... SEGA did this first with PSO2.

They can't force anything. This allows them to release their games on weaker systems, including phones. The performance will always be sketchy. So, no, even if they try, they won't suceed in going full cloud, if that's what you mean. Games aren't like film/tv screening services. They can't be buffered and the input delay is noticeable. Not sure that will be something that can be overcome.

Well, get me my cane, suspenders and old-man pants because the moment that happens is the moment I start calling you all whippersnappers and talking about the good ol' days. ;)

This isn't the first time the industry tried to push technology to limited success. Ultimately, the market decides if these things will become standard. There are people like me who dislike the idea of not owning your games (I avoid digital when possible for that reason), and that's a portion of the market who wouldn't go for a cloud/digital-only system if there's an alternative. How much of an impact that would have, if any, remains to be seen. PSP-GO was a long time ago, so it's not really a good frame of reference anymore. But, considering the backlash to Xbone's no used-games policy (which would effectively happen with a digital-only system), it would be a hard fight to win.
