Forums - Nintendo Discussion - XENOBLADE CHRONICLES 2 (UPDATE) the first two hours!

Which one is better ?

Xenoblade Chronicles 2 50 81.97%

Xenoblade Chronicles X 11 18.03%

Total:61

Xenoblade Chronicles X and Xenoblade Chronicles 2 are two very different games in their own separate line. The X series is more focused on a big connected open world exploration, while the main series is more focused on story and being more linear (still with beautiful areas and huge areas to run around in though).

Anyway I enjoyed 2 so much, great story, characters and music and can't wait for the story DLC. Since you played so much of the first Xenoblade Chronicles you may want to finish off the story of that game but you don't have to.

As for performance it's 720p 30fps (no big noticeable drops in my experience of playing through the game) and it has some good anti aliasing which is a rarity on some Nintendo games today. In docked mode the resolution is sub HD with varying resolutions, but on a tiny screen and coming from 3DS games it is still very playable undocked to me at least.

Anyway fantastic game, was on the fence about it at first because I hadn't played the first game and only X but I am very glad I got it in the end. One of my most played and enjoyed Switch games.

Performance issues aside. It's a good purchase.

Not much to add from what others have said other than buy Xenoblade 2, but finish the first one.

XC2 is better than XCX imho. It still has some of the shortcomings of its predecessor, but at least it has a good plot and the combat system is more interesting and balanced. The game has it's fair share of issues though. Storytelling is just...terrible. Unless you like third rate animes, in that case you might even like it. Also, character design takes bad taste to new heights.

And then you have the typical issues of monolith soft games: a lot of uninteresting and repetitive side quests (fetch quests mainly), performance issues, focus on grinding and parameters in the end game rather than fight mechanics, overabundance of mechanics in general, some of which are redundant and have little usefulness and so on.

Interesting .. can you tell me what where your biggest frustrations with the game ?

Well, let'see. First of all waiting 20 hours for the combat to get fun, the pacing of how much mechanics and party members you unlock as you go really hold back the fun factor of the battle system, is only after that time frame for me that I get enough depth with the party and the enemies when the combat becomes enjoyable.

When I tried to do sidequests, a good chunk of them can drag in its steps, but what is really infuriating for me, was that, you do well in say 4 out of the 5 steps of the quest and then you get hit by annoying walls like the field skills and I just can't bother with it afterwards.

Also how some parts of the menu managing can be slow like the merc mission system or checking some upgrades with your characters, kinda piles up on my annoyances.

There are some more specific frustrations but that is spoiler territory.

Thanks for responding .. well damn i guess i will have to find out for myself because i definitely want to get the game now xD It’s a JRPG so it’s bound to have some frustrations especially if you havent played a lot of them.

I highly recommend it, if it wasn't for Zelda it'd be my 2017 GOTY, and was easily my favorite JRPG of last year.

Probably not a popular opinion based on reviews, but I'd say Xenoblade 2 is at least comparable in quality to the first game. It has a lot more mechanics, but it does a nice job easing you into them. The story is fantastic, characters are endearing, and the OST is god-tier. I also enjoyed the art-style a lot more than the previous games. It's more animated, sure, but it also feels more timeless overall.

It also has Mythra, which is enough of a reason to buy the game on its own.

Or you could say there are a couple of them .. 😁

first of all, understand this - part of what made Xenoblade great was its underdog status. nobody saw the game coming, and that only seemed to multiply the enjoyment people were able to take from it.so when you start playing Xenoblade 2, you will have some higher expectations. that being said..

the battle mechanics work a bit differently, it feels weird at first but learning how each element of the battle system works in amazingly fun and rewarding. IMO, Xenoblade 2 has better battle mechanics than 1 and X by far. you dont just have to sit around waiting idly for your arts to fill up again, and there are special elemental combos that can be fun to mess around with.

the story is a bit shorter, or so ive found. ive played through Xenoblade twice with both runs lasting around 90 hours. Xenoblade 2 took me around 70. im not complaining at all though. Xenoblade 2 in every imaginable aspect has a story that rivals the level of the original (and my god will you love the ending). although to my surprise, it has more of an anime feel than Xenoblade 1, with some exaggerated facial expressions and more witty banter than expected. i thought it was fun, not what i was expecting, but i did enjoy the story. and just like in the first game, each character has their own quirk that makes for some great interactions with the group, and this time around everyone isnt just trying to avenge their dead boyfriend/girlfriend, so that releases some of the tension.

as for the music, i felt it was amazing. here, take a listen to this -

Yeah i know all about underdog status a lot of games i know had that effect. So you are saying that i shouldn’t look at the reviews for the game and compare it to the first game ? thanks for the feedback btw getting a lot of good vibes from you guys and i’m definitely warming up to buy it.

I don't know, I'm 10 hours in... and I feel it's a pretty frustrating game. The navigation arrow that tells you were to go works like shit, flying enemies come out of nowhere while you're fighting some other monsters and proceed to outnumber you and kick your ass, those supposed "special" core crystals gave pretty normal blades, having to stay still to attack is a pretty stupid decision, travelling around the world is slow and a pain in the ass compared to X, Tora and Rex are some of the most annoying characters I've seen in a videogame (they are even worse than Loki in Bayonetta 2)... and missions to progress the story are super lame. Like... I need this so go get it... oh, but I forgot to tell you that I need this other thing that is located on the other side of the continent...

I don't know, maybe it gets better... but right now I feel disappointed.

That’s pretty understandable from my experience when it comes to JRPG’s and RPG’s usually only after 10 or more hours i start enjoying the game fully .. that happend with Persona 5 and Monster hunter world so i’m not worried about that. Yes i heard the navigation is a pain in the ass i am worried about that. As for the traveling around the world i haven’t played X so i can’t compare i don’t think it will bother me, characters are fine to me i watcehd some early cutscenes and i dig it.

Good to know hahah .. as for your other complaints i have no reall issues with those except the framerate drops but i guess i have to put up with it if i get the game great -.-

I don’t finish many games, especially JRPGs, but I finished both xenoblade games, I’m even replaying 2 right now with the new game plus. If you like JRPGs at all, you will like it. I honestly never even noticed any of the things these people are complaining about, I just enjoyed it.

thats pretty much how i went about it. i looked at a few review scores (not even the reviews) and the original reveal trailer. other than that i went into this game completely blind.
