Forums - Sony - Ps5 still 3 years away

This makes no sense at all! Why would Sony announce to the world that “PS4 is in the final phase of its lifecycle” then say “3 years away”. That’s like half a generation. There’s no way they’re waiting till 2021 after having just said it’s in the final days.

Sounds like Holiday 2020 is in the books. Hopefully 7nm+ Zen3 & Navi will set the baseline for the next gen. Also very excited to hear they are working on a Portable as well. Would be perfect if PS5 had both a Mobile and Home option. Give me 720p - 1080p on the go, and 4K at home, and I will be very happy.

TIL  "rather than separating portable gaming from consoles, it’s necessary to continue thinking of [portable gaming] as one method to deliver more gaming experiences and exploring what our customers want from portable. We want to think about many options." means "we are working on a portable console"

Have you considered the above phrase might simply mean "we haven't ruled out releasing another portable some day" and nothing more?

There is that possibility. I just believe if they mentioned it, they are actively developing something. Whether it ever comes to market is another story. Just the fact that they mentioned exploring the space, and thinking about many options is music to my ears.

Yay! The same console forever and ever and ever! This was what I always wanted when I was little. Fuck newer, more advanced consoles with better everything. We shouldn't have even upgraded past Pong, now that I think about it. What was the point?

I say, PS5 no earlier than 2075.

personally I never understood those that were desperate for an upgrade sooner as apart from lack of a 4k Blu-ray we just haven't advanced enough in tech to justify the move yet.

Clearly not a PC gamer.

sounding more like 2021. I know they are all very loose with the truth but 2020 is really 2 years, even the end of 2020 is at best 2 and half.

2019 was always a joke date in my eyes.
2020 is when the tech stars all align.
2021 is when that tech gets a little more refined.

Theres little the current consoles can't do.

There is a crap ton they can't do.
Ray Tracing is gaining more momentum... The current consoles are woefully inadequate for that task to the degree we are looking at in the immediate future.

Honestly, I wish console gens were longer, especially starting with this gen, graphics already look more than good enough, and I really wouldn't mind this gen going on beyond 2020/2021... but that's just me, lol.

I would also like generations to be elongated.

But to do that... The Playstation 4 and Xbox One needed to have released with high-end hardware to start with to really go the distance... But that didn't happen, thus they are aging far faster than the 7th gen machines.

Actually I am first and foremost a PC gamer, not sure how that is relevant. In the console market you have a very low price point that must be met, gaming at the sub $500 level still doesn't have significant enough advancements to justify an upgrade. consoles are a trade off of affordability vs performance. Ray Tracing is barely feasible in high end gaming gear, it certainly won't be the norm for next gen consoles unless Sony et al decide to price themselves into oblivion.

I have hard time seeing that PS5 will be launched after 2020. also I dont see how final phase of its lifecycle can be 3 years.

Nah, 2 and a half years. Holiday 2020 it's going to launch. The whole "crouch down" thing is in reference to a forecasted drop in operating profit for PlayStation for the Fiscal Year ending 31st March 2021. As a console launch isn't usually a particularly profitable time for PlayStation I expect this to be the fiscal year the ps5 launches.

November 2020.

Did you not read the article? Why did you insert you're own interpretation to the article despite it being cut and dry on what the contents were? SMH.

The article is an interpretation itself of this quote: "We will use the next three years to prepare the next step, to crouch down so that we can jump higher in the future,"

I believe they are interpreting the quote wrong. This quote was in relation to operating profits, which is why it was accompanied by an operating profit forecast for the FY ending march 2021, (130 - 170 billion yen), an advanced forecast is certainly not the norm.

The "next three years" are the fiscal years ending march 2019,2020 and 2021. "The crouch down" is the reducing profits towards the end of these three years.

Taking the "we will use the next three years to prepare the next step" as meaning the PS5 won't launch till after march 2021 is a mistake imo.

In my opinion a new XBOX console will have the biggest influence when the PS5 is released.

Take your time Sony, the PS5 can wait. I don't feel the need to upgrade yet. What exactly am I going to be upgrading to exactly that's different than the PS4?

Is it at the starting phase? Middle phase? No. It's entering its final phase. Makes perfect sense

Holiday 2020 sounds about right. It would mean that this gen would have lasted just as long as the seventh generation. An amazing feat considering how people expected this console generation to be so short.

I'll also probably keep my PS4 as my main driver for an extra year and get a PS5 holiday 2021.
