Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Nintendo starts moving to a Wii-like “non-gamer” strategy for the Switch

I don't find "non-gamer" anywhere in the Q&A.

I dont understand your argument. So what if team sizes werent as big as they are now? Back in the 1800s we had factories work huge swaths of people to their max capacities. The only thing stopping this now are laws, but fortunately Japan still has an employer friendly society that allows them leeway in getting out the max of these developers. If they arent sleeping in sleeping bags then they arent doing their jobs well enough. I'm not asking for anything unreasonable, just make sure these developers are working the kind of hours that necessitates sleeping in the office at least half the week.

There should be a balance between getting the most out of your staff, and giving them respectable working conditions. Nintendo should hit that balance. There needs to be a balanced work culture that pushes staff to do their best, while also supporting them and giving them a decent working environment. A concentration-camp/death-march culture is very hard to get right and usually isn't a good idea. I want Nintendo to bring out the best in their developers and demand hard work from them. But I don't want to see stories and articles talking about modern Nintendo being abusive and shady towards them like Konami. Konami is not an example any game developer should follow.

Why do we need that balance though? Look at what some of those Apple factories in china have been able to get out of their workers (Foxconn etc)

You can't compare a manufacturing plant to a game development studio. Video Games are a creative medium, and game studios shouldn't be run like factories. Besides, those companies in China don't design and develop the product, they just assemble it.

I think people should just chill out.

Well, we still have smash, rpg, metroid prime, bayonetta, etc coming, I think the core gamimng is safe on switch.
But I thought the 20 million would come from pokemon/animal crossing thing.

How to sell a game console to non gamers? They thing labo would be a hit? If not, 1-2-switch like? switch sports? Would it have the same appeal?
I dont think they shouldnt, but It is hard to think how can they surprise me and appeal non gamers, at least enough to get the 20 million.

Even myself with the amount of work hours I have, 2/3rd of the time I spend playing on my mobile phone anyway.  Now imaging a casual gamer, if their work hours is anything like mine, the only fix they need is mobile phones to get that 30mins to an hour in a day of casual play.

Except the Switch can do stuff phones can't do. A casual gamer can own both a Switch and a phone, just like how they can own a phone and a tablet. I'd argue the Switch is better than modern tablets for games thanks to its controllers and console level games.

You are missing the point. casuals don't need a console, they have enough to satisfy their needs on a phone now.

The ONLY reason I have a switch is because as a gamer i need a core gaming console for more core games.

The day i go all casual is the day i won't need a console lol.

The entire point of the Switch is to make console gaming more accessible by combining it with mobile gaming. It's well suited for casual gamers with busy lives, while also introducing them to console games. That doesn't mean the Switch is a phone replacement, but I doubt casuals won't likely have both a phone and a Switch.

We praise Sony for allowing creative freedom for their first party developers so why can't we say the same when Nintendo allows their developers, like Tsubasa Sakaguchi who directed Splatoon and is the director for Labo because he wanted to (go read his interview on Labo if you want), give them something similar?

Yeah, if LABO doesn't get praised and nominated as a GOTY contender I am going to riot. Are you serious? Were you as uppset when Activision didn't get praised when it released that game where you collected physical figurines?

That's not what I'm arguing about..

I didn't really give much of a impression with Skylanders because it wasn't for me. Why are you questioning me about that and twisting my words? If it was successful, cool it did something to attract consumers. If it didn't, oh well. I have no stock on Skylanders, Labo, DS, or anything that these companies made. I can only hope things go well for said products both in quality and quantity. If you don't like Labo, then its not for you. No need to wish for its failure just because its not for you. Its not threatening you or your family or anything.

It's my thinking with movies and TV shows as well. I watch movies that interest me. I don't wish anything bad upon anyone or any movie.

You may call it noble or whatever, that's just me. Same as your opinion on stuff like Labo, just your opinion.

I am rather curious as to how they plan to do this, as they've made games like Brain Age, Wii Sports, and the New Super Mario Bros series as an aim, just to name a few. I'm not worried that this will affect the usual core games much.

Casuals dont need console games, theyre happy playing games on their phones now. Core gamers need core games and actually shell out money to buy consoles for them.
