Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Nintendo removes DKC Tropical Freeze from Wii U eshop

People can still buy a physical copy for a reasonable price. This is nothing compared to the shutdown of the Miiverse... business is business.

I'm at work, so I can't check my Wii U to personally verify.  I was going by what I was seeing others reporting online.

https://gonintendo.com/stories/308107-digital-option-for-donkey-kong-country-tropical-freeze-s-wii-u-v

It was gone yesterday, it has since been put back up this morning. I've already informed RMC. It's back up on the US eShop as well. Maybe they made a mistake or maybe they figured the bad publicity wasn't worth it ahead of the Switch version's release.

But that source lives in Europe and doesn't have access to the US region in the Wii U eShop:

So how can he verify that the digital purchase returned? He can only check the browser based eShop for the US region... and there is still no purchase button for the Wii U version.

Neither the Op nor thread title reference this as pertaining to the the NA WiiU eShop only.  At the very least, that detail should be amended since European WiiU owners have screenshots of the download purchase button still being available.

This probably affected 50 people max. If you didn’t buy the game within its first four years, you weren’t going to get it on a dead console. And if you were just buying it at a discounted price just to spite the developers for porting, maybe you should be worried more about your own scruples instead of Nintendo’s.

That just makes it worse.....

Why bother if it only effects 50 people? potentially selling 50 copies at 20$ instead of maybe 50 x 60$.... its small change for nintendo.

Its not worth the backlash and bad PR this causes.

You need to look at it from a business perspective. If people see it’s available currently for $20 for a brand new copy, then you’re going to lose hundreds of early adopters. Those early adopters are the most important because they’re paying the most and doing everything a Port is intended to do - recoup money for a studio who took a chance on a less successful console. If you want it digitally for $20, you can just wait another year or two when it’s sure to be discounted on Switch.

I’m not seeing where the detriment is. If you really want Tropical Freeze for Wii U, you can get a new copy for $20 from most major retailers or a used copy for $10. Nintendo just isn’t producing anymore, be it digital or physical, for Wii U at a discounted price because it undercuts the asking price for the Switch version.

I know other publishers have usually given a notice or announcement before taking any of their games down so I think it would've been nice if Nintendo did the same.

I think there was enough of an advanced notice. They stopped production of the Wii U, discontinued physical copies a year ago and announced a different version for a new console almost two months ago. There’s no reason it needs to be up for sale for the Wii U at this point.

If that's the case then PSN and should start closing up shops with their PS3 games.

Regardless of consoles and physical games stopped production but it cost almost nothing to keep a game on sale online.  In fact it probably cost Nintendo absolutely nothing leaving their own game up on their own store lol.

Personally I couldn't care less about this game, if I wanted this game I would've picked it up awhile ago. I just think it would've been courteous of Nintendo to at least give a proper notice that's all.

So people didn't make the game a multimillion seller on Wii U despite a Nintendo Selects price, but now they suddenly want to buy the game on Wii U?

So, you support this decision?

I don't support it, but I am not against it either. Something that nobody cared about anymore was taken away, so there's no good reason for anyone to act appalled because of it.

Legend11 correctly predicted that GTA IV (360+PS3) would outsell SSBB. I was wrong.

It's still worth noting.

Digital is still available new on Amazon for $25

I don’t disagree that it would have been the courteous thing to do. My argument was that the outrage over a four year old title being removed from a dead console’s eShop is exaggerated. We knew it was coming at some point and there is almost no user base on the Wii U at this point. The people that wanted DKCTF on Wii U already have it and Nintendo shouldn’t have to undercut a port just because some people may or may not want to download it on the Wii U in the future. I would feel the same if any company did that - videogames hold no intrinsic value so the publisher has a duty to maintain a strong price point.

I didn’t mean to make that first post seem pointed towards you and for that I apologize.

Well, it's back ! Guess the tantrum from these 50 WiiU owners worked ...

(If only it could with Mother 3 too ...)
