Forums - Nintendo - Switch hacked: unpatchable exploit is a security nightmare for Nintendo

I might grab a switch now. I couldn't justify buying one and all the games. I already got a PS4 and i only really care about the older IP of Nintendo

Same here.

I don't want one but the gf does. I bet she wouldn't play it much, so having to spend 300€ for the console and about 45€ each for a small selection of games to play (maybe 3 to 5 games) would just be too much.
It's getting more realistic now.

I don't understand why anyone sees this as a negative. How many Switch users on here will now stop buying games, and start stealing them?

more than you may think.

FINALLY. Was so disappointed how hard Nintendo tried to protect this console when the DS, 3DS and Wii were pretty much open season from the first few months. This is great news, should boost hardware sales tremendously and give people the opportunity to play so many classic emulator games on a portable screen. Nintendo was stupid for not releasing the virtual console in time. Now they will regret it.

It’s hard to tell because we don’t know how Nintendo will implement something virtual console related. Plus, even if it causes more hardware sales, would the majority really care to put in the time to hack their consoles?

I HUGE chunk of DS and PSP owners put in the effort. Even if they don't, those of us that will will get rewarded with proper emulation of past consoles that Nintendo is too lazy to provide anyway

theft, lol. This is digital. You want to lock people up for "stealing" some duplicate copies of code.

Theft, lol. Books are just ideas put to paper. You want to lock people up for "stealing" duplicate copies of books? - Some guy that didn't understand copyright laws circa 1805.

Theft, lol. Inventions are just new ideas, and discoveries put to use. You want to lock people up for "stealing" ideas and discoveries?

Theft, lol. Identity is just a meaningless designation given to an individual at birth. You want to lock people up for "stealing" an arbitrary designation?

We can do this all day. Just because something isn't physical, doesn't mean it doesn't deserve protection under the law.

Books are physical, stealing an identity is a problem with you steal something tangible like money, etc. I have no issue with stealing inventions, so try again.

Would you ever sneak into a movie theater?

It's not a nightmare for Nintendo. Those who might pirate, assuming we even get to running back ups soon, will pirate anyways. They're not consumers for Nintendo. I don't think this will become mainstream because of course you still have to do some shoddy tomfoolery with the pins, it's not like a bannerbomb for Wii (not yet anyway) and a lot of future games from Nintendo will most likely require internet to get the most out of them. You're not pirating Splatoon 2 and playing online anytime soon, same goes for Smash, etc.

I think this will be best for homebrew apps like emulators, and backing up saves. The same things that have been happening since the GBA. Switch will continue to be a success and software sales will perform well as usual. I'm sure I don't speak for the majority of Switch's marketshare/userbase but I don't see even 1 million switch owners using this particular method in the future. Once it becomes, put your SD card in with a file and go to the web browser or something similar to that, this won't be a huge issue. But I guess it's inevitable for 16-18 Million devices. Nintendo best just get the revisions out ASAP.

Stop with that tired defense. "They weren't going to buy it anyway" is a load of bullocks from every angle. If Nintendo's assault on R4 and M3 cards is any indication, it's clear it does has a noticeable impact on sales. Why else would Nintendo spend millions fighting it?

The same reason why Ubisoft is clinging to DRM despite admitting it's useless.

This exploit will have just as much impact on sales as had any exploit in the history of videogames. Something between negligeable, zero, and net positive.

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

People running pirated games on console hardware are the worst. They have all that power to use emulators on PC and mobile but they choose to use that power by showing to the publisher how great their platform is.

Have done it, no one seemed harmed in the process

Hmm, lets wait and see how 3rd party react, from what i can gather on consoles they are not too tolerable to pirates.

All 100+m consoles were hevily pirated and they all had great sales despite that, so I dont think it will big problem, especially because Nintendo will release patched revision of Switch.

Pirated consoles don't boost sales of consoles too much because most people dont pirate consoles in any case. Also, Nintendo will release patched revision of Switch.
