Forums - Gaming Discussion - Sonic Mania tops 1m worldwide sales

I wonder if 1 million units sold is enough to make them want to continue making games like Mania?
I really thought they would have sold more copies than that. In any case in the future I will only be interested in Mania-like games when it comes to Sonic.

If a 2D Platformer selling 1 million and counting (I believe all digital and various collector's editions) isn't enough I'm not sure what Sega was expecting.

Still waiting on Shadow DLC. What's taking so long Sega!?

I mean it did sell less than Forces, which released 3 months later, reviewed nearly 30 points lower, and cost twice as much on release. I could easily see Sega being disappointed with Mania sales. Hopefully since it was developed by indie devs it has at least made a profit, and hopefully the physical release this summer sells well. Sega did hint at Mania 2 in the SXSW panel, hopefully it happens if the physical release sells well.

Congrats Sonic for getting in shape, and congrats Switch audience for the strong support.

duduspace11 "Well, since we are estimating costs, Pokemon Red/Blue did cost Nintendo about $50m to make back in 1996"

Mr Puggsly: "Hehe, I said good profit. You said big profit. Frankly, not losing money is what I meant by good. Don't get hung up on semantics"

Azzanation: "PS5 wouldn't sold out at launch without scalpers."

And probably 50% of those sales are in Switch. On Xbox One it's probably not more than 5%

On the other hand, I thought the game had sold more than that.

How many people worked on Mania?  I cannot imagine it lost money.

Given they are making Sonic Mania Plus seems to indicate they are happy.

Great success. Well done Sega

Xbox One has accounted for 15% of Sonic Forces sales. I'd wager that the percentage for Mania is similar. Switch is most likely 50% or higher though, same as Forces.

Forces Breakdown

Switch- 51%

PS4- 33.6%

Xbox One- 15.4%

I’m pretty sure sales were hindered by the lack of a physical release. These are crazy good numbers for digital only.

Remember that Generations, Forces etc were physical and digital.

Also keep in mind that Mania certainly didn’t cost as much to make as Generations and the like.
