Interesting, most here seem highly in favor of Nier. Why did you not like it if I can ask?

Persona 5

I can't speak for Ni No Kuni II as I have yet to play it. But for the rest I would say there's a fair chance you would love all of them.
But I want to emphasize Nier: Automata. Because what really stands out about Nier: Automata is not something you can see in trailers of the game. Not even from playing the demo of the game, because at that point it still 'only' appears to be like a Devil May Cry or Bayonetta type of game. Which isn't bad, mind you. But Nier is so much more than that. Both in terms of gameplay, and it's narrative.
As a reviewer put it:

"I think the entire gaming industry, while celebrating Nier: Automata, is drastically understating how incredible and important it is. Nier: Automata is a rare breakthrough moment in the history of our medium. And is an absolute must play for anyone who appreciates videogames. Or good storytelling. Or increadible music. Or true innovation in any of the elements I just listed."

^This reviewer explains it very well.
I think out of all these games you listed, the one that runs the highest risk of being overlooked is Nier. Because while the appeal of Persona 5 or Monster Hunter can be very obvious, it's not the case for Nier: Automata. Where it's combat system easily distracts from the fact that it's actually much more than a DMC/Bayonetta type of game.
I recently had a conversation with someone on this forum who said they consider the story semi-revolutionary, but didn't expect it because of the gameplay.
Me on the other hand expected a good story, but I thought the stylish combat system would still be the main takeaway from the game. It's not. It's not even third on the list.
That said, the gameplay, including the combat, was very good. I had some things to say about the game in that other thread (before finishing it) that I'll copy and paste here:

Nier: Automata? It meets all those requirements.
If someone says that 2017 was the best year for gaming, chances are they already played it. But looking at your game preference, you may not have.
While most of the gameplay is a stylish hack & slash with jrpg elements,

clever use of dynamic camera angles can at any point switch the gameplay to a platformer, or bullet hell shooter.

It can even play like Castlevania:

The story very philosophical and made a friend of mine say "I never realized how beautiful the world is".
Without spoiling anything, it's about a conflict between androids, humanity and robots. And the story is played from the point of view of three different characters (two of whom are female), and you get to take different paths through the story because of that.

The setting takes you through a nice variety of locations.

In terms or retro visuals, there's only a bit of that. Mainly when you use one of the main character's hacking skills.

The music is absolutely fantastic, and it's no wonder it won Best Soundtrack at the 2017 Videogame Awards.

You do a lot more in this game than just kill things though.

I'm currently on route C, (which is actually not an alternate route, but a continuation of the story after clearing routes A and B),  and even though I'm not finished with the game, I can already tell its something very special.

I feel like there's a good chance you'll get to at least Persona 5 and Monster Hunter: World eventually because of the hype and how they are presented. So I'd suggest you play Nier: Automata first. It's a game no videogame fan should miss. Especially if you like rpgs.

It probably has more in common with an action rpg than any other genre.

I couldn't agree more with eveything you said.

Nier Automata is one of the most memorable games I have ever played and it has my  favorite story in any video game and honestly I doubt anything will ever surpass it. I still think about it even though it's been months since I finished it. Seeing those pics in your post even makes me nostalgic. The game is just incredible and unique.

Out of those 4 I only played Persona 5. While I did find it enjoyable, it also got to the point where it dragged on, so keep that in mind if you're playing that.

Here is a list I made of the top of my head if you want to dive in more, though:

Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Collection
Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age
Final Fantasy XV
Tales of Berseria
Nioh
Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin
Dark Souls III
Bloodborne
Odin Sphere: Leifthrasir
Disgaea 5
Valkyria Chronicles Remastered
Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 + 2.5 ReMIX
Kingdom Hearts 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue

Personally I would add World of Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest 11 and Nier Automata to your list and I would remove Tales of Berseria, Odin Sphere, Disgaea 5 and Valkyria Chronicles. Other than that most of your list is good.

But my updates on your list makes it PERFECT.

Nier Automata is more of an action game and you'll get that from God of War right now.
But be sure to get Nier later as well as it's an amazing game too, that is, after you get Nioh, the best game this gen.

You disappoint me BraLoD , what happened to , forget those games get legend of dragoon response.

Thanks for the responses guys. I'll probably pass on Bloodborne and Nioh, just because the Souls games aren't really my thing, and both seem very much in the vein of those. I hope to play all the ones in my OP eventually, but for now just trying to decide on one. And considering all the games coming this year and how backlogs go, realistically whichever one I go with first may be the only one I actually do end up getting around to. The consensus definitely seems to be between Persona 5 and Nier, so that helps me narrow it down. Hiku's post on Nier is definitely making me tempted to go with that. The variety in gameplay looks really intriguing.

Hikus post is really good and the video he posted is spot on about the game, it does a great job at describing why the game is so amazing and its also the Nier Automata review with the highest view count on Youtube, (despite coming from a small channel at least compared to IGN and the others), and i think the reason as to why is because so many people agree with what the guy is saying, about how Automata despite being celebrated by the gaming media is still pretty underrated and deserves better, (and i completely agree with that).

And even then you still have people like this on the comment section of that video

I recommend you absolutely play both Nier Automata and P5, but i also see that you are worried about your backlog and you want to get on with it, in which case thats another strong point for Nier since its a shorter game than P5 (so i recommend going with that one first and later on grabbing P5, there may even be a definitive edition later on much like Persona 4 Golden).

Same dude, it became my favorite game ever and despite the fact that im sure im gonna love GOW i have no hopes that it will surpass Nier for me, in fact i dont think there is gonna be a game that does that in a long time from now.

Honestly my initial response would be: Sell it, get a PS3 and play LoD. lol

But as he'll be definitely getting it for God of War I decided to asnwer his question instead.

But isn't LoD or it successor coming out on PS4? or have we given up hope.

Back on topic , Persona 5 is my suggestion.

I appreciate this thread. I haven't tried most of the games mentioned so far, but I've gotta say that Nier: Automata sounds the most intriguing.

Persona 5 first, then everything else.

Well, first of all, NieR and MHW aren't JRPGs.

Ni no Kuni 2 is fantastic. There's just nothing absolutely awful about the game aside from its own intent from the beginning of the game to undermine the world map with instant-travel.

Persona 5 is a great point to jump on the SMT bandwagon, and will somewhat mentally prepare you for SMTV (somewhat... Maybe a bit.) Be wary, though, as it is at the minimum a 60 hour game.
