Forums - Sony Discussion - The PS4 really should have backwards compatibility!

but it's not like it's unfeasible considering that the Xbox One is able to do it.

I don't know about that.
The Cell architecture of PS3 was much more complicated than X360's.
And Phill Spencer even said that he didn't think it was possible to do BC on XBO, and was surprised when their engineers figured it out.
Sony's Shuhei Yoshida also said he didn't think BC for 360 games was possible on XBO:

"It was surprising, I didn't think it was possible. There must be lots of engineering effort. They talked about 100 games, but what kind of games will be included? Is it smaller games or big games? We don't know. "

And for the possibility of BC on PS4 he said this:

"PS3 is such a unique architecture, and some games made use of SPUs very well, It's going to be super challenging to do so. I never say never, but we have no plans. "

I'd love to see PS3 BC on PS4, but I don't expect it to happen.

Interestingly enough, I just recently purchased an ol' Ps3 Slim and bought/redownloaded from an older account, 9 games for some throwback gaming. So much nostalgia. Would i prefer to be able to just play them on my Ps4? sure, but it doesn't bother me.

Wheel me out to the curb for garbage day

I can appreciate those wanting the feature. For me however,it's inconsequential. I bought one PS1 game after the PS2 released, and spent exactly NO time using the feature for it or any other game. For PS3, I bought God Of War, Persona 3 FES, and the MGS Box Set after it's release. I played a little bit of Persona, but again, felt compelled to move on. This gen has been slightly different, and I have gone back fairly frequently, but that's partially due to circumstances which have been thrust upon me, in addition to the fact that games from gen 7 have aged remarkably well. More so than in most recent gens to be sure. And finally, while the convenience factor would be a plus, I don't mind using the PS3 itself to play PS3 games, and it's still my go-to blu-ray player. Plus it's a world class pornography machine. It absolutely thrashes the PS4 in that regard. I have 2 PS3' slims hooked up and in use, and a third super slim for backup.

I'm not bothered by it ... yet. I understand that from technical point it's much easier to be done on XBO than PS4, due to differences in architectures of previous systems, BUT, if I don't see BC on PS5, then I'll be worried.

I don't even think PS5 will ever have BC.....they only want to sell you re-releases/remasters along with psnow subscriptions...

Bet with Intrinsic:

The Switch will outsell 3DS (based on VGchartz numbers), according to me, while Intrinsic thinks the opposite will hold true. One month avatar control for the loser's avatar.

at the moment i don't really think we need it, and at the end we have remasters and remakes😉

I agree with B/C for PS1. There's little excuse not to have an emulator on the PS4. It would also lead to more sales on PSN. I do like the PS2 ports on PS4. Look much better. I just wish they would release them more regularly. PS3 is probably impossible, considering the architecture. Though, the PS5 should be powerful enough to pull it off, so I do hope they make the PS5 B/C with all PS4 systems.

it should have had BC to PS1 and PS2

we know its near impossible for it to BC PS3 because thats really hard and it might not be powerful enough

PS1 and PS2 should have been a no brainer.

It’s mostly fan service though, and I guess they feel like they don’t need to.

I am really starting to hate my PS4. I will probably sell it after I play Spider-Man, and then get a PS3 with backwards compatibility. The PS4 only plays 3 formats: PS4, Blue-Ray and DVD movies. A BC PS3 plays 6 formats: PS1, PS2, PS3, CD, DVD, Blue-Ray. That makes it so much more convenient.

I have so much gaming hardware around my house, I am trying to look for a way to make things easier. For me BC is a huge deal.
