Forums - General Discussion - Is the Oculus GO just a $200€ VR porn device?

GearVR is the porn device. As long as Oculus is tethered it will remain useless as such.

Why are tethered VR devices even a thing?

But Oculus Go ain't tethered. You also don't have to insert and calibrate your $300 - $1000 Samsung Smartphone in the device.

They're just trying to carve out their portion of the market. Sony VR and HTC Vive both have rather clear targets, the former being a quality, comfortable, affordable (comparatively) VR experience with a large library for PS4 owners, and Vive has focused on enthusiasts and pushing the VR experience to its limits.

Oculus has kind of felt like the odd man out... it lacks the backing of Sony's library and install base, is primarily for PC users with required specs that are only a little less demanding than Vive's, and costs a lot more than the very cheap "VR"-ish experiences. They just gotta identify exactly who they're targeting.

For more complex experiences/games that can't be calculated fast enough on a mobile SoC (Snapdragon / Exynos ) but need power in the PS4 Pro / GTX 970 area.

Also, if the VR-headset is connected to a home console or PC, you have access to much more storage space... good VR games are huge due to detailed textures (much more important in VR than on a TV screen). 4K or 5K video files are even bigger if you want an acceptable quality (and the streaming quality is usually shitty).

Oculus GO with 32 GB or 64 GB can't even extended with microSD cards as far as we know, so it would be already full with a handful of good VR games or video files.

Ah, never mind, I failed to do research. I assumed that it meant tethered in the sense that it was locked to certain applications, rather than not being mobile.

Did somebody say porn!?!

Yes and it's only getting better. I tried a 5k video from Czheck VR porn and apart from the slight screen door effect in low light scene, it looks hella real. I'd link the video but not sure if that's against the rules. So real you, you might as well have a stripper in your room, with a no touch policy.

Anyway, You thinking about getting the GO? Or sticking with PSVR until PSVR 2?

My PC is pretty weak but if it can somehow support this device, I would buy it. Not willing to go all in on a  new  PCwhen I'm not going to use many of the features. Aside from gaming (which I've actually never tried), I can do pretty much whatever I want with the devices I currently have.

I thought that too until I seen the difference between gear VR and PSVR and then again recently with Samsung odessy (Which I haven't watched porn on but I know from the media it will be a night and day difference)

That is why I think Oculus GO is a porn device, it is a step head of PSVR for media quality, almost nearing PCVR levels. Sure, you can say it is a device meant for productivity and social applications but what do people use their laptop for more, Conference calling or Porn?

That's blasphemy on this site.  PSVR owners don't like hearing that there is a noticeable visual difference between PSVR and the higher end VR devices.  I own the Oculus Rift, and my best friend has PSVR.  I mentioned on this site that my friend and his wife were both amazed by the difference when we tried each others devices and I was proverbially stoned in the village square.

porn device will sell more than a gaming device though.
