Why are tethered VR devices even a thing?

For more complex experiences/games that can't be calculated fast enough on a mobile SoC (Snapdragon / Exynos ) but need power in the PS4 Pro / GTX 970 area.

Also, if the VR-headset is connected to a home console or PC, you have access to much more storage space... good VR games are huge due to detailed textures (much more important in VR than on a TV screen). 4K or 5K video files are even bigger if you want an acceptable quality (and the streaming quality is usually shitty).

Oculus GO with 32 GB or 64 GB can't even extended with microSD cards as far as we know, so it would be already full with a handful of good VR games or video files.

Ah, never mind, I failed to do research. I assumed that it meant tethered in the sense that it was locked to certain applications, rather than not being mobile.
