Forums - Sales Discussion - IHM Markit: SWITCH sales 12.8 million in 2017

If this thread gets locked (= cencored) in 1 hour like the 2 previous threads that had this same info, it makes the objectivity of this site to look very questionable.

But, to the point:

Several sites have reported that SWITCH sold 12.8 million units in 2017.

https://nintendoeverything.com/spending-on-nintendo-products-roughly-doubles-in-2017-nintendo-expected-to-overtake-microsoft-in-console-market-share-this-year/

http://nintendotoday.com/analyst-nintendo-to-overtake-microsoft-in-console-share-in-2018/

This is according to IHS Markit, which is a company (3.8 billion revenue, 13 000 employees) that provides information and analysis to support the decision-making process of businesses and governments in industries such as financials markets; aerospace, defense and security; automotive; chemical; energy; maritime and trade; and technology. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IHS_Markit

Seems pretty credible, and the most accurate info we have on this matter.

And the "argument" (= excuse) why IHS Markit's credibility was questioned in the previous threads was ridiculous: "IHS Markit reported that PS4 had sold 53 million units instead of 53.4 million". And this was 2 months after SONY announced 53.4 million, so 53 was just a rounded number.

The idea that SWITCH sold "only" 12.8 million units in 2017 seems, for some reason, to bother many people on this site. Is this because 12.8 is not 13.5-14.8, or because quickrick's estimate was close to 12.8? Looks like other sites don't have a problem reporting this info, so it's weird that on this site it's hadled like "don't even mention/think about it". We should get up from "the trenches" and be able to discuss objectively. Suprise me.

12.8 million sold to consumers is a phenomenal start for the Switch's first 9 months. No idea why anyone would take that in any sort of negative context.

How has their revenue anything to do with them being accurate?

Instead of seeking to convince others, we can be open to changing our own minds, and seek out information that contradicts our own steadfast point of view. Maybe it’ll turn out that those who disagree with you actually have a solid grasp of the facts. There’s a slight possibility that, after all, you’re the one who’s wrong.

They also claim smo sold 9.3 m we have it at 7.9

Their revenue implies a certain level of trustworthiness because a company based on market research and data won't be around for too long if the data they provide isn't any good.

The original thread was locked for a couple reasons.

One reason was because it was created by quickrick, a user who already pushed some controversial comments on the forum, to gloat about something that was pretty much pointless.

Reason 2 (and the more important reason) would be because they were wrong on PS4 sales after the fact that Sony themselves had already put out sales numbers. This brings their reliability into question because it was such a simple mistake to make. It makes them look incompetent and people simply wouldn't trust the data pushed out.

They were off by 400k on a basic number. Their numbers are unreliable and to use them as fact (especially to rub peoples noses in it) is a silly thing to do.

Locking this one up too. I strongly advise you don't push your luck when you come back from your ban.
