Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Emily Rogers: Lots of Switch Ports For 2018; NSMBU Switch Port Coming?

I don't buy this. Nintendo expects to sell 25-30 mil Switchs this year, those goals haven't been set because they expect the system to get anywhere near that number off of ports like NSMBU. I'm sure they're betting on Labo to be big, and so am I, but also nowhere near enough on its own to reach that target with just a year of ports. They're gonna have something major or two up their sleeve on the software front. I'm still not ruling out both Pokemon and Animal Crossing hitting in Q4. Holiday sales for the system would be insane off the backs of those two and would make total sense with their sales expectations for the year. At least one of those two will hit this holiday. I think they have an impressive Q3 and Q4 up their sleeves and are holding off on revealing most of the games because they want all the attention on Labo for the first half of the year. Then around E3 they will unveil this year's heavy hitters.

The other thing that makes this sketchy is why on earth would they release an NSMBU port over a Mario Maker one? That would make zero sense. Nintendo has been way too on their game to do something that stupid.

Perhaps they feel NSMBU/NSLU works better with the Switch's "gather around" multiplayer style. They might be looking at it from a POV of feeling like they don't have enough multiplayer titles that in particular can be played in the Switch's "break off a Joy-con and pass it to a buddy" mode.

Mario Maker on Switch is gonna happen too obviously.

But NSMBU is a 6 year old 2d platformer. I fail to see where the appeal is even going to be for that to sell very well. Why not port 3D World if they're that desperate for more multiplayer experiences? That would likely sell very well. Or just make a new NSMB game if they really think they have to have 2d Mario asap, they're not that hard to make.

I think the thinking is Nintendo wants to make sure they got all their "big IP" cornerstones out on the Switch in the first 2 1/2 years as well.

They already have a 3D Mario on the Switch ... but not a 2D Mario. I think it will sell fairly well too, maybe not gangbusters but certainly enough to make Nintendo a tidy profit. A lot of people have not played that game before.

Mario 3D World on Switch will probably happen as well, but I would guess in 2019. Nintendo is going to slow roll Wii U titles onto the Switch over 3 years.

Mario 3D World, Mario Maker, Zelda: WWHD, Zelda: TPHD, Captain Toad, probably deserve Switch releases too if things like Bayonetta and Hyrule Warriors get them.

Didnt Kimishima say they gonna ship 20mils in next fical year?
I dont know how bunch of old ports can help reach that number...

We will not ofical plan for next fiscal year (we will have next year), but Kimishima said they are planning around 20m to ship in 2018. FY year, not 25-30m.

Those are ports of games that were only on Wii U that had very small user base that Switch already passed, and its not like that Switch will have only old ports this year.

Is there need for MK9 in switch, when the Wii u port sells like a brand new Mario kart game ? I don't think so!
Let Nintendo save it for switch successor.

For somebody who played Mario Kart 8 to death on Wii U, yes! I would like a new Mario Kart for Switch. I sometimes feel like I'm getting penalised for buying a Wii U :P

Patience, I guess you have a lot of it, for having been a Wii u owner!

Wait for switch successor! hehe

So much this. But see it as a chance to explore the amazing content on other consoles. PS4 is incredibly cheap right now and still offers a big range of original third party and first party content with actual next gen features. Two incredible games (MH World and Dragonball FighterZ) are released today and no one here is talking about them because they need to talk about random indie-games or old ports for Switch. Ni no Kuni, God of War, Days Gone, Spiderman, Dreams are all 2018 original PS4 games.

Buy a Switch in 3 years or so, when it's way cheaper and offers a decent amount of original games.

And you don't help your case when you list Labo 1 and 2 as two of four new games. Those things basically turn the Switch into a childrens toy. Not saying they won't be popular, but they don't count as new games coming out. So Nintendo as so far two new games for first half of 2018, and neither one of them big games.

So new games dont count as new games if they are aimed at a different demographic from you? How interesting.

Hey! All of us used to think like that way too...... when we were toddlers! And hadn't yet reached the stage of psychological development to realize "the whole world ISN'T about me."

Thank you, Freud!

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

If this turns out to be true, then my fears became true: Nintendo never had a good/great 2018 planned.

Ports and remasters might work for some or even for some time, but after awhile, gamers want to see what's new, not old. Not to mention those who are on the fence and want to see more than ports that they once had interest in or can get them for way less money.

You don't keep interest or gain momentum with ports and more ports.

I really hope that, at least, some of those games end up being multiplats of the bigger Christmas games.

sounds about right.
Looks like I'm going to wait another year for the Switch
