Perhaps they feel NSMBU/NSLU works better with the Switch's "gather around" multiplayer style. They might be looking at it from a POV of feeling like they don't have enough multiplayer titles that in particular can be played in the Switch's "break off a Joy-con and pass it to a buddy" mode.

Mario Maker on Switch is gonna happen too obviously.

But NSMBU is a 6 year old 2d platformer. I fail to see where the appeal is even going to be for that to sell very well. Why not port 3D World if they're that desperate for more multiplayer experiences? That would likely sell very well. Or just make a new NSMB game if they really think they have to have 2d Mario asap, they're not that hard to make.

I think the thinking is Nintendo wants to make sure they got all their "big IP" cornerstones out on the Switch in the first 2 1/2 years as well.

They already have a 3D Mario on the Switch ... but not a 2D Mario. I think it will sell fairly well too, maybe not gangbusters but certainly enough to make Nintendo a tidy profit. A lot of people have not played that game before.

Mario 3D World on Switch will probably happen as well, but I would guess in 2019. Nintendo is going to slow roll Wii U titles onto the Switch over 3 years.

Mario 3D World, Mario Maker, Zelda: WWHD, Zelda: TPHD, Captain Toad, probably deserve Switch releases too if things like Bayonetta and Hyrule Warriors get them.
