Forums - Gaming Discussion - If Nintendo got more consistent third party support, would the third party sell more than the first party?

As it stands we have two types of systems: the system sold by first party (Nintendo), and the systems that sell third party (Sony and Microsoft).

It is generally believed that because Nintendo fans only buy Nintendo, they don't buy third party. Third party doesn't sell, so third parties don't come, which means that Nintendo gamers don't buy third party.....that whole death spiral.

On the systems third party does sell, they tend to do better than the first party offerings on their systems, such as Halo and Uncharted.

Now....let's say that we are dealing in a scenario where the issues with third party never developed. Perhaps the 64 and Gamecube had the third parties try more, or they were easier to port to. The systems don't do marketdly better, but the third party is more consistent from 64 to Switch.

Do the Third Parties outsell the first party like the other systems?

The Democratic Nintendo fan....is that a paradox? I'm fond of one of the more conservative companies in the industry, but I vote Liberally and view myself that way 90% of the time?

I dont think so:

Especially not in this generation. People that are interested in third party games are currenlty buying the system that get those. A normal player will not buy a console and then beg for a port to his console, he will just buy the console that already gets the game.

So it will definitly need a long time to change people mind and make 3rd party as attractive on Nintendo plattforms as on PS/Xb

No, the best selling titles of every Nintendo system ever have been Nintendo games, that will never change.

That doesnt mean 3rd parties cant improve their standing on Nintendo platforms and sell extremely well though.

When the herd loses its way, the shepard must kill the bull that leads them astray.

People who buy Nintendo consoles buys Nintendo games mostly, at least if we see it from the perspective of percentage of 1st party sold compared to the total games sold. But I can see some series compeeting with the bigger Nintendo titles. Monster Hunter has sold wonderfully on the 3DS, Just Dance has been one of the best selling games on the Wii (and it will probably become one on the Switch to, the motion possibilities are there). Games like Minecraft, GTA V and other big titles could definitively reach the top 10 on any Nintendo system if given the chance.

You know it deserves the GOTY.

Occasionally, yes. But should quality releases persist from first party, they will generally win.
Heck, first party even did well on PS3/4, without too much previous legacy of dependence.

If Nintendo got consistent third party, it would have the same attach rate as on the other systems, eventually. Just look at the SNES. It sold more copies of many third party games than the Megadrive.

I LOVE ICELAND!

Absolutely not!

Third parties don't stand a chance against Mario, Zelda, and Pokemon.

It does have Minecraft, you know, which will eventually eclipse every single Nintendo game.

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

Are you talking about general sales (3rd party vs 1st party) or just about best selling games?
Beacuse best selling games will definatly be 1st party, but 3rd party generally will most likely sell more games than 1st party games.

If we imagined a scenario where Sony and Microsoft left and market AND all third-party games appeared on Nintendo AND Nintendo no longer gimped third-party sales the way they did the last time they had a monopoly ...

Then I think we'd see a shift over time. First, if Playstation and Xbox fans migrated to Nintendo, they'd automatically begin to buy more third-party offerings than is typically seen on a Nintendo system. Second, the buying habits of prior Nintendo fans would begin to change over time as they discovered new franchises, developers, and genres.

The sales of Nintendo games would still be very high, of course, but the percentage among the installed base would see a downward spike at first and then a slower, more gradual descent.
