I think it was around 2012 or 2013 That my brother sent me his old ps3. I still had it hooked to an old 480p tv, the big boxy ones. But sometimes when my parents where out I hooked it up to the living room tv wich was 720. Was not until I graduated college and bought my own 1080p tv that I truly played in hd sometime in 2014.

It takes genuine talent to see greatness in yourself despite your absence of genuine talent.

I bought a 1080p television in 2009, before that I played my 360 using an rgb scart cable.

Started gaming HD in 2006 with a 50" 1080p Sony KDS-50A2000 on PS2 with Gran Turismo 4, before moving to PS3 a few months later.

Started gaming in 4K in 2016 with the 75" Sony XBR75Z9D and the PS4 Pro.

Started gaming in VR in 2016 with the Sony CUH-ZVR1 and the PS4.

PSVR was by far the cheapest, and has offer by far the most amazing expereinces to date.

Backwards Bonus: Started gaming in SD in 1992 on a 32" Toshiba, on NES and Mario/Duck Hunt at Grandpas. Also got my moms old Atari + Pitfall + River Raid and played on the 24" Sanyo at Home.

I wanna say around the time Metal Gear Solid 4 came out is when I got my PS3.

Same!

But surprisingly I wasnt blown away. Actually, I expected much more from HD games at the time... so I felt underwhelmed.

Yeah, a lot of upscaling back then.  It was still bounds ahead of PS2 though, so I was satisfied.

2006 when I got my ps3. My parents had a widescreen tv that had a dvi input instead of an hdmi one. Bought a converter and i was blown away by the sharpness of the original Resistance. Haven't looked back since

Black Friday 2010 or 11. Was amazing to actually be able to read text in various games. Even text in some Wii games were impossible to decipher on a non-HD set. Upgraded from 1080p to a 4k last year; the sheer quality of the new set & HDR made it as worthwhile a visual jump.

2014 when I bought a Wii U. I technically played HD games before on PC (And it barely counts since my PC back then was pretty terrible for games), but my first real HD experience on consoles was on the Wii U.

Your poll doesn't go back far enough. I had a 720p/1080i Sony Trinitron back in mid 2003. It was CRT, cost over $3000, and weighed 300+ pounds, but it had a picture SO much better than the flat panel displays at the time that it was ridiculous. The built-in speakers were amazing as well. Even the Samsung TV I bought in 2009 ( which was a solid upper-mid range model ) couldn't, in some ways, produce as nice of an image as that beaut, and it sure as shit didn't handle motion as well.

Good question. Probably in 2007 with my PS3. Though I'm not sure if I already had my HD monitor back then. In the end it doesn't really matter since HD was just another arbitrary step in natural display evolution.
