I've never played Sunshine or 64 but of those 3D mario games I've played Odyssey easily takes the cake except for the story but who the fuck plays Mario for the story and yea the final boss was pretty lame. Other than that it was so great my G.O.A.T.

I don't think 3D World was better (though the multiplayer aspect was really fun), but I agree with you about some of the weaker aspects of Odyssey. Especially Mushroom Kingdom being so weak was a terrible gut punch after unlocking it.
Odyssey is a great game, but as far as Mario games go it's not that impressive. I think it's probably better than Sunshine based on the virtue that if you hate the hat mechanic, it probably won't ruin the game for you, but if you hate F.L.U.D.D. in Sunshine it will definitely ruin the game for you.
64 and both Galaxy games are probably better. And I also agree that New Donk City is an absolutely fantastic level. Contrary to seemingly most people, I really liked Wooded Kingdom though. Wasn't a big fan of Sand Kingdom.
I've played 3D World and while I've enjoyed it, it's as bland as Mario games come. Odyssey has a lot of gusto and charm that 3D World lacks. The thing is, if we're talking about linear Mario games, 3D World doesn't hold up to the 2D games or Mario Galaxy (heck I had more fun with 3D Land tbh). Odyssey is an experience and I disagree about the ending, I thought it was great. Simple, fun and just charming.
Haven't played 3D World, I'm sure it's fun, but it looked like it wants to be a 2d Mario game but probably isn't as good as them. Odyssey is great, though I'm not quite sure it reaches the level of iconic game like 64 and the Galaxy games did. I've put probably around 40 hours into Odyssey so far trying to get close to 100% right now, and will probably put another 15 or so in before I stop playing. Very good game, but not quite awe inspiring.
I'd probably put Galaxy or 64 as the best, then Galaxy, then Odyssey, then Sunshine. And I haven't played 3D World.
Some huge levels like the sand level just don't work that well for a platformer because it's mostly flat land which doesn't make sense in a platformer. There's no level that i disliked though, maybe the wooded forest level was my least favorite main level. Mushroom Kingdom was a very cool surprise but turned out to mostly just be a way to get Yoshi and refight all the bosses, still a nice addition though. I liked the final boss fight and the ending, not sure why some people didn't. The 8-bit 2D sections are so cool haha I always love finding a new one. Obviously there are plenty of moons that you don't have to do much for, but that was kind of the point. Instead of having only a few stars the game has a ton of moons that makes you have to really explore the levels and while some are easy and just kinda sitting around some are very well hidden and some are gotten by accomplishing main challenges of the level.
I really enjoyed Odyssey - great levels, costumes are hilarious, 2d sections are great, boss fights are nice, bigger game than i expected with nice surprises, plenty of platforming and exploring, cappy was a cool tool to use, New Donk City was awesome.
Eh, I wouldn't say better or worse. There are in no competition, really. That ending was outstanding, though.
I still would love a proper remake of Mario 64 aswell as Super Mario Allstars with modern visuals. Not the NSMB ones.

Overall I would say:
Galaxy 2 ≥ Odyssey (though I would give Galaxy 2 a slight edge because it was slightly more refined; I also like that Yoshi was more involved in that game, I liked the music better overall, and I preferred the bosses in that game) > Sunshine > Galaxy > 3D World > 3D Land > SM64 (I know SM64 is a great historical game, but I came to it much later and found the controls to be stiff and the camera felt somewhat unnatural; I am pretty sure my opinion of it would be higher if I played it during its era) > SM64 DS
For me personally it's 64 > Galaxy > Odyssey > 3D World >= Galaxy 2 >>>>>>>>> 3D Land (Haven't played Sunshine).
Odyssey was great but it still was missing something for me. I guess I still prefer having the stars/moons/whatever tied to missions like in 64/Galaxy 1&2. I also really missed a hub world, it's such a basic thing but I'd still have liked one.
Oh, and even though I absolutely hated Zelda now having voice acting, I actually enjoyed the songs in Odyssey a lot, so no complaints from me there. That ending had a lot of charm.

To me, Odyssey is the more polished game for sure, and the highs in Odyssey exceed the highs in 3D World, by a longshot (at the very least, by a hookshot). That being said, I really really enjoyed the gameplay style of 3D World; something about neatly packaged 3D levels that made the game very easy to consume.
Completely different games. 3D world excels at multiplayer gaming in quick bursts. I LOVED playing it with my daughters. Odyssey is the definitive single player 3d platformer.
