Switch has stronger competition? Ps4 doesn't compete very well with switch in terms of a portable and it definitely doesn't in terms of its type of software. Cartoon style games mainly. Switch has very little competition.

PS4 on the other hand directly competes with xb1 and pc.

Switch competes with the PS4 due to it being a hybrid. So yeah, while not competing as directly as the PS4 competes with XOne, it is competing with them. And the PS4 is a strong contender, so there is that.

Plus when the PS4 launched, MS botched the launch with its horrible year one XOne policies and overall attitude towards it, and Nintendo had the Wii U.So yeah, the PS4 had it easier, though that dosent diminishes in any way its accomplishment.

Valid points but the elephant in the room is the pc. Remember those years when this place was spammed with consoles are doomed threads, pc will take over etc etc. Now obviously they're long gone with ps4 doing so good. And now we have switch also selling good so you never hear that pc is going to Doom console talk anymore.

Don't worry though it will be back when the ps5 launches.

Just like claiming Switch will fall off a cliff next year while also claiming it will be flat YOY is logical and makes sense.

and i showed where falling off a cliff could mean anything. yet were back at it again?

No, words & phrases cant just "mean anything", they have actual definitions.

You linked a couple articles that used the phrase when describing a sudden drop in stock value.

A companies stock dropping ~8% over the course of a few hours can be considered falling off a cliff.

A piece of hardware dropping ~5% from one year to the next is not falling off a cliff.

Those two things are not comparable.

Switch whooped some serious arse on Amazon in Dec, both hardware and software. I guess we'll see if that is indicative of how of Switch performed at other retailers.

What about the other elephant in the room? Why is PC counted as a competitor for PS4 but mobile isnt for Switch? Seems a bit like a double standard.

it's all context. I traded stock, and 4-8% is not falling off a cliff to me. switch according to many people is selling as well as ps4 at the moment. many people think switch doing 60 million means it's sales will fall off a cliff to them.

None of that makes any sense.

Well you conveniently consider price atm but you leave it out when comparing switch vs ps4 launch aligned. Switch launched $100 cheaper and with a portable function which gives it a huge advantage on paper. Yet ps4 still beats it.

Anyway I'm gone off on a tangent. Last numbers we have for America in November the ps4 steam rolled the switch. The Switch is still doing respectable numbers its just not on PlayStations level. And WW it's a bloodbath.

That's not how things work lmao. Do you honestly believe a $300 PS4 at launch would have worked for Sony? That would mean they either take huge losess per unit sold or the console would be considerably weaker (thus giving the XBOX One a considerable edge).

The only reason PS4 won in November is because of a $100-150 price cut. Only then it can compete with the Switch in North America.

Switch not only had no discounts, but also suffered from shortages for much of the year (and still in Japan). Third parties were also very reluctant to develop games for the Switch, but now the flood gates are open and next year will be better. Playstation could always count on full third party support because they didn't have to prove anything.

@ bold - This, ladies and gentlemen, is what is known as a "straw man" argument. The PS4 was very competitive with the Switch throughout the whole year. Switch was only selling a small percentage more than PS4 in the losses it accumulated in 2017.

The Switch outselling the PS4 by small amounts throughout the year is considered, by you, not competitive. But when the PS4 outsells the Switch by a landslide, obtaining TWICE the amount of units that Switch sold in November, the Switch is competitive with the PS4.

If you are going to move goal posts, you should make it harder for people to score goals on you; not easier...

shipments numbers should be fun in 6 days.

Shopments? Are you now using WW instead of the US for some particular reason?

I think the Switch could pull off the win, quite honestly.
