Depends on the format of the franchise. If each entry in a series is self contained, like Final Fantasy for the most part, then I agree with you. Since the outcome of the sequel has no direct bearing on the characters of the previous entry of the franchise, I hate one Final Fantasy game and still enjoy a proceeding entry.
However, if each entry is direct sequel, I disagree. I can't enjoy Mass Effect 1 or 2 anymore. Mass Effect 3 killed the trilogy for me. The mishandling of the overall narrative as well Shepard and the bulk of the the ME2 cast in particular kills the first two games. Why embark on the journey when the destination is so unsatisfying?
Side Note: I share the OPs disdain for Dawn of the New World. Emil Castagnier is one the worst protagonist in JRPG history.
