i said for all we know, i think it's possible. i'm pretty sure 2018 it won't sell as much as 2017 in US, and europe. 3ds peaked it's first year.

There is a massive difference between peak and fall off a cliff.

3DS sales dropped from 13.95 to 13.51, which is like a 3% drop, hardly falling off a cliff.

yea falling off a cliff is unlikely, but slowing down in us and europe is very likely, but japan will make up for it.

Huh, well that's a weird way to say the console is successful because of its dual function as a portable and home console, haha. I think people are okay with a bit of a downgrade if it allows for the ability to play it on the go.

That still seems like an exaggeration.

America has historically been Nintendo's strongest region. 3DS is the only system that did better in Japan vs America, every other system sold more in America and in most cases by a pretty sizeable margin.

Europe/rest of World is harder to predict. All of their handhelds and Wii sold well in these regions (over 20 million) but all of the home consoles outside of Wii have done under 10 million.

Is it possible it will slow down in the west? Yes.

Is it very likely it will? Not really.

Exactly, with Wii U it was less tolerable because many games performed significantly worse than PS3/360 counterparts despite being on par with those systems plus there really wasnt any added benefit.

With Switch, its a good deal less powerful than PS4/XBO so it absolutely makes sense that games would be downgraded and for many people portability is a large added benefit that makes up for those shortcomings.

The Wii U was an awkward system with many problems, so I can see why that device didn't take off. I did like the system myself though.

I enjoyed it too, not really the system itself so much but it had some great games on it.

Switch is just on a whole new level though, it took Wii U like 3 years to get a library as good as Switch has in just 9 months.

it was a ninendo home consoles in the 3d era only one out 4, took off because of motion controls, 3 didn't.

you have to look at previous generation. we saw what the mobile market did to vita and 3ds, 3ds ands ds started out selling nearly the same, one ended doubling the other in sales. how will the market effct switch after things settle down next year, i'm very interested in seeing what happens.

Not gonna deny that mobile had a big impact but Nintendo/Sony are very much at fault as well for not adapting to the market and making significantly less appealing products than their predecessors.

That does not seem to be the case for Switch.

Also just looking at the last generation when we have ~30 years of data to look at is very shortsighted. By that logic we should have expected PS4 to sell worse than PS3.

Not really. if you looked at the market with common sense you would see ps4 could easily dominate the market, ps3/360 were the same market. ps3 came out a year later, and a year and a half later in europe (best market), and still beat 360, despite with all the mistakes sony made with the hardware and price, microsoft getting a kinect boost. but you should look at trends from one genration to another, and why did this console not sell as much as it could.
