Not gonna deny that mobile had a big impact but Nintendo/Sony are very much at fault as well for not adapting to the market and making significantly less appealing products than their predecessors.

That does not seem to be the case for Switch.

 

Also just looking at the last generation when we have ~30 years of data to look at is very shortsighted. By that logic we should have expected PS4 to sell worse than PS3.

Not really. if you looked at the market with common sense you would see ps4 could easily dominate the market, ps3/360 were the same market. ps3 came out a year later, and a year and a half later in europe (best market), and still beat 360, despite with all the mistakes sony made with the hardware and price, microsoft getting a kinect boost. but you should look at trends from one genration to another, and why did this console not sell as much as it could.
