Forums - Nintendo - What will Pokemon Switch be?

It really depends on if it's a Pokemon MMO or not. The thing is, selling 12-15 million copies of Pokemon 3 times on a console(and maybe 6-8 million for a 4th pokemon on a console) is sooooo tempting and makes them a lot of money. Going for a title with microtransactions and expansions would make them focus on one title, maybbbbee two during the Switch's entire life, just to capitalize on one investment.

I don't know which would make more money, to be honest. What would probably make them the most money is releasing Pokemon games that are limited like the 3DS titles(not multiple regions, no MMO elements, limited scope), but have microtransactions. That could hurt the relevance of the franchise though.

The Pokemon IP is insanely powerful, selling over 10m units per mainline entry.
Pokemon GO was a monster, over 750m downloads...

I don't think something that powerful can just evaporate.
Even if microtransactions do harm the IP, it will likely recover and grow to new heights.

A big plus for standard titles is: Nintendo can sell Pokemon games at $60 now.

I hope it's based on like Italy or the UK.

I think people underestimate how diverse one based on the US would be tbh.

Gamefreak is already picking and choosing locations in the US and always seems to do prefectures/cities going back to Red/Blue/Green. Unova (B&W) was based on the US, specially NYC. Alola (S&M) is based on the state of Hawai‘i.

I think they will choose a remake as their first game on Switch since Sun and Moon bringing in a new generation was just released and it gives them time for ideas on the story and spaced out bringing in another generation so soon.

Erm, Pokemon Go was hugely successfully because it has the insanely huge smartphone install base. No matter what they do the Switch will never get anywhere near close to that. They don't need to though, Pokemon games are still massive money makers for them on consoles, hence why I'm also not sure why you think they need to change up the Pokemon formula, especially with anti-consumer bs like microtransactions.

Their teams are smaller (though they were recently hiring HD developers), but Pokemon games are also lower budget. I mean really only the first game in a console generation takes real effort, as the rest of the games on the system heavily re-use the first game's engines n assets, and that's if they're not literally the first game but with slight changes. I have no doubt they'll still be able to apply this strategy for releasing a game almost yearly in the HD era.

No thanks, I wouldn't want to suffer through any sort of micro-transactions in any of my games.

As for the 1st Pokemon Switch game, maybe a remake of Pokemon Red/Blue but with vastly improved 3D models, finally giving that console Pokemon feel, or like a remixed Pokemon game of some sort. Then eventually we'll get a home console looking gen 8 game.

I think it'll likely be a reimagining of Kanto rather than a remake (Well I certainly hope it wouldn't just be a straight remake), another story based in Kanto, based on battling a resurgent Team Rocket 15-20 years after the events of G/S. I'd be all for it, so long as they expanded the Pokedex well beyond the original 150.

I'd like if they included Johto/Hoenn as well, but I can't see that happening. We'll never have more than one region in a game ever again, in fact the regions themselves are likely to get smaller and smaller under Masuda's leadership, he is the one who said that they withheld the Battle Frontier from ORAS because people "don't dedicate time to games anymore", he also criticised the decision to put so much content in HGSS... As long as he is in charge, anyone after a sprawling, deep Pokemon game is going to be disappointed.

Well, Alola grew in size in comparision to Kalos, so I dont see anything to worry about.

Bet with Intrinsic:

The Switch will outsell 3DS (based on VGchartz numbers), according to me, while Intrinsic thinks the opposite will hold true. One month avatar control for the loser's avatar.

Yes, but Kalos was an extremely low bar to cross. S/M's story, Pokemon and characters were solid, but the region itself was smaller than it could have been, and much more gated than it needed to be. Then now, US/UM may have been handled by GF's "B-team", but they are nothing but copy-pastes of S/M with additional post-game content, the lack of effort put into them has completely drained my hope for the Switch game at this point (hopefully they'll have something to show off in the January/February direct that blows our minds).

I hope it is a full blown Pokemon experience. Switch should be Nintendo's only device going forward, so it should receieve the best of their mobile and home offerings.

Well, wasnt that expected? This has been the case with every third version aside from Black 2/White 2. I would argue this is much better third version than Yellow/Emerald/Platinum, due to having a 4-5 brand new 'mons, and other things like rainbow rocket, ultra recon squad, and an expanded ultra-space is far and beyond what those three others version bought to table.
