This game takes place in a distant future where "humans" have wasted all food resources and have to rely on finding another planet with food as a last resort for survival. Don't worry, it's actually colorful and cute :D

Haven't played it so don't really know and so this could be stupid but I'm thinking of Pikmin here.

7.   Super Mario Galaxy 2

What can I say, other than this expanded greatly on the original, while bringing Yoshi back. Everything I said about the first game applies here. Because this is a sequel a lot of the "tutorial" levels are thrown out, and this game just starts off at full blast and never lets up. A lot of people prefer Portal 2 to Portal for this very reason. That's about all I have. Read SMG's entry for further information.

6.   Mass Effect 2

Mass Effect 2 streamlined Mass Effect's gameplay, by taking out the clunky menu system. From the beginning Mass Effect 2's storyline is interesting, and compelling. The game opens up with the main character dying, and then being brought back to life, by a mortal enemy. Said mortal enemy wants the main character to put together a team for a suicide mission. Everything you do in this game determines whether or not your suicide mission is successful. Several supporting cast members either end their character arcs dying for the mission, or rising above and living, depending on what you did through the game. Almost all of these supporting cast members are written perfectly, and are genuinely interesting. We have, a mad scientist responsible for genocide, trying to make up for his past mistakes, an ex-cop gone vigilante, a dying assassin, two science experiments gone wrong, a hivemind AI robot, and a girl who's entire species has huge immunodeficiency problems. Mass Effect 2 makes this spot for it's dynamic choice/consequence system that remembers everything you did, including your save file from the original game.

5.   Dark Souls

In most games dying doesn't mean much other than loading up your save file, and trying again. The Souls series brilliantly changes all that by constantly saving for you, and forcing you to play on a single save file. Dying once will make you drop all your XP and Money in a pool of blood. If you can get back to your old corpse before dying a second time you get your experience and money back. Dying twice in a row means you lose all your hard work since your last level up. This adds a very real element of consequence to the game, that most games these days are lacking. Add in an online element that allows other players to hunt you down, or help you out, and the tension becomes very real. Dark Souls is often billed as a hard game, but it isn't hard so much as it forces you to pay attention. Carefully probing a new area, while well stocked with supplies, and summoning other players for boss fights will let almost anyone beat this game. Dark Souls is an open world game ala Metroidvania titles, meaning everything is interconnected, and there are shortcuts abound. The story of Dark Souls isn't told in game, but rather in the lore written on items. I'm always enjoyed this method of storytelling, because it let's the player play the part of detective instead of being told outright how the game's story goes.

4.   Final Fantasy VI

Many people credit Final Fantasy VII as the best game in the series, but FFVI does almost everything both before, an better than FFVII. The active time battle system that adds tension to turn based combat was there first. Epic cutscenes like the opera scene were done with excellent spritework, that holds up better than FFVII's CGI. There were over ten unique playable characters each with their own story arcs and questlines. The crystal leveling system allowed you to give any character whatever moves or stats you wanted. Most games threaten to end the world, if you don't defeat the bad guys, but FFVI actually does end the world halfway through the game. Oh and did I mention you can suplex a ghost train in this game?

Valkyria Chronicles
Previous Year: #5

Valkyria Chronicles was the game that originally convinced me that buying the PS3 was worth it. No other game before it had really been good enough to justify the money I had spent on the system, but this one did it by itself. I originally fell in love with the game's visual style as I saw it in reviews, but once I bought VC it was the complex and deep gameplay, the wonderful characters, and the interesting story that took inspiration from many real world events and countries that made this game such an amazing experience for me. A perfect sign of this was a certain scene in the game that to this day remains the only time I've had to put down a game and take a break from it because of how much it affected me on an emotional level. It was that moment when I knew I was playing something special, and that holds true to this day.

That looks quite interesting. And if I read the internet right it is turn-based, which I like more. I may look some Youtube-gameplay videos and consider getting it.

10 years greatest game event!

#40 The Legeng of Zelda: A Link to the Past - This game got a fantastic overworld with tons of stuff to find and fun fast-paced combat. The dungeons don't have particularly complex puzzles, but they're intrincate and well designed. I know people will think that it's sacrilege that I put ALTTP below other Zelda games that I'll mention later :P

#39 ICO - Ueda really knows how make you get dem feelings, this game's ending made me cry. The game is relatively short but it has nice puzzles and good level design, with many of the areas being interconnected in some way, like, there were many times when I thought "oh, so these two areas were actually connected".

#38 The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX - One of the most unique Zelda games, especially in terms of setting and story, as it doesn't feature Ganon, Zelda or Hyrule or anything related to them. its ending made me feel really sad. The dungeons are well designed and I think the sidescrolling sections are a nice touch. I also like how dense its overworld feels.

#37 Jak & Daxter: The Precursor Legacy - One of my favorite 3D platformers, I loved the freedom of exploration and really enjoyed the game's missions and level design, The Lost Precursor City is particularly amazing.

#36 Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon - I love this game's atmosphere.  The mansions and the puzzles in them are so very well designed and I also like how each mansion has a different theme.

#35 Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions - I love this game's story and dialogue direction and I think they did a great job  with the translation in the PSP version (which is the version I played and has a different translation to the PS1 version). The gameplay is also great, with a very deep job system.

#34 Paper Mario - A great adventure with charming party members and a very fun turn-based battle system, where timing is actually important to deal more damage. I also love its art-style, which has aged better than most N64 games.

#33 Tales of Symphonia - I really liked this game's characters and the interactions between them. One aspect where this game shines are the dungeons, which are particularly well made, especially for j-rpg standards. The game's plot was kinda generic and but I still found it engaging enough.

#32 Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings/The Conquerors Expansion - This was one of the first video games I ever played and it's the one that I've played the most (I've installed it in every computer I've had). I love the fast-paced gameplay and how all the civilizations feel very different from each other, also, its single-player campaigns are so incredibly amazing.

#31 Pokémon HeartGold - My 2nd favorite Pokémon game, I love the atmosphere of the Johto region and that you visit Kanto after beating the champion (which is one of my favorite aspects of the 2nd gen of pokémon games). The game is just so content-filled, with tons of things to do in the post-game aside from the typical multiplayer stuff.

More hints.

#3 “Since man first walked upright, he has looked to the stars and wondered, ‘Are we alone in this cold corner of space? If something is out there, would it be friend…or foe?’ What would this Earth man think if he could see a desperate space ship, fleeing at a speed faster than imagination? What would he think if he saw the impact of powerfully potent neutronic missiles upon its fragile frame? What would he make of the strange pod that ejected from the ruined remains, just in time to avoid its mysterious inhabitant’s destruction? And would he gape in wonder at the dozen or so strange canisters that burst from its hold and fell towards the atmosphere of our guileless globe? What emotion would pass through his mind as he observed these selfsame containers as they passed through our atmosphere and fell upon the surface of an unsuspecting metropolis? So many questions and so few answers…until now dear viewers…until now….”

Hint 2: This is a real time tactical RPG.
Hint 3: This PC game pays homage to silver age comic books, especially those created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby.
Hint 4: The developer of this game is actually more well known for a game about an underwater city dedicated to Objectivist philosophy.
Hint 5: In this game you control up to 4 super heroes on each mission, and you can usually pick which 4 you want to take from a much larger roster.  The super heroes were created by the game developers and do not come from the comic books.
Hint 6: In this PC game you control a Force of super heroes, fighting to protect the Freedoms of the people of Earth from Lord Dominion and his forces.
Hint 7: Director Ken Levine said that one big reason he made this game was that no one had made a good super hero game yet.  Of course City of Heroes and Spiderman 2 would both be released 2 years later.

Well, cheating and using Internet I say Freedom Force. Feel free to ignore this guess if anyone else can guess it without cheating.

game #4

Hint 1: This turn-based strategy game is one of the most successful entries in the series, although it got criticized because one gameplay element of the series could be deactivated for a playthrough to make it easier/more accessible.

Fire Emblem Awakening?

My last game before entering the TOP 3 is Fire Emblem: Awakening. Flilix had it right.

Fire Emblem is a great working series, with a gameplay I generally like. Awakening just does this mechanics so right and so fulfilling. And at the same time looks pretty great and has funny dialogue. It was just a blast to play it.

While the gameplay was enticing the story and cutscenes kept the play entertaining, not that you always do the same. Also I played multiple savegames to try out different things (for marriages for instance) and to play one casual playthrough and after I managed a level followed up with the playthrough with permadeath for advanced challenge.

This is one of the games that made the 3DS such an great gaming device. I'm pretty interested if Switch can follow up on this. The start indeed is good.

Yes, Valkyria Chronicles is turn-based, and an excellent game in general in my opinion. It's also very easy to find these days as its available on Steam and PS4 as well.
