It's really surprising considering how much the PS2 outsold the Xbox by. The fact that sales of the 360 and PS3 are so close and people think it's an amazing victory for Sony shows just how far expectations for the Playstation brand have fallen since the PS2.

There was a time when if you told someone that an Xbox brand console would keep up with a Playstation brand one for even a year people would have had good laughs over it. I guess those days are over.

Nothing I hate more than people that remind you of this after they hear about the PS3 doing well. I understand that expectations were high after the PS2, but it's a new generation. Not many people expected the Wii to sell like space heaters in Antarctica, but that doesn't mean everytime we look at it's sales we should comment on the surprise. It's just an attempt to marganalize the accomplishments of the PS3.

Well the PS3 was supposed to be the 800 pound gorilla that was going to come out and smash everything.  The fact that the 360 held its own and sold just as much as the PS3 isn't what I would call a success for the PS3, I would actually consider it a success for the 360.

i wouldn't, considering the amount of games each of them had last year. really and trully, the 360 should have finished the ps3 off.

while i agree that the glory days of the playstation have taken a huge knocked recently, i still have some disagreements with your point. first, yes the ps3 did have a terrible first year, but with so many heavy hitters that came out with aaa status on the 360, it STILL sold the same amount of the console with zero games. the biggest game on the 360 (halo 3) couldn't shake off the ps3.  it shows that the playstation brand is still stronger than the xbox brand, people are buying a console with no games and a bigger price point, rather than the cheaper and game rich 360.

second, the xbox has always been popular in the u.s. the orignal xbox sold 15 million units in america alone. that's more than half of the consoles sales in one region. the same is happening with the 360, america is the 360's best market, it's not as strong in other regions. infact, virtually all of the 360's lead over the ps3 is basically america. the wii hasn't even outsold the 360 in america, yet it's about 5 million ahead in worldwide sales.

long story short, the ps brand is still stronger than the xbox brand. if the xbox was $599 at launch with zero games for months, it would be out of business. sony have (had) the power, and it saved them this time, but next time they actually have to launch the console properly. sony can still dominate in other generations in my opinion, just like nintendo is doing. but i don't think we'll ever see an xbox that becomes a leader of the pack.

^No that was March '07

those numbers are not included

It was March 23rd, 2007 right? Doesn't the first month of it's launch include a few weeks in April?

if u only consider that the first week ps3 did 600k sales then it dropped severely no we cant see any effect from ps3 launch in europe

edit: nevermind.

Not trying to be a fanboy. Of course, it's hard when you own the best console eve... dang it

oooh, i've never been +1'd before lol

@DOATS1,

That's something I find interesting. That with all of the negativity against the PS3 from media and console owners, I'd think that things would be different. Heck, 'no games' is still an argument that people use even today against the PS3.

Still, that's just world wide, the hardware table says that the 360 sold over 2.3 million more than the PS3 in the same time period.

You're loving it aren't you? lol

I actually love how PS3 fanboys claim victory when they beat 360 even tho they are still getting pounded hardcore by the Wii. But hey, I keep forgetting that the Wii doesn't count in this generation cuz its not HD lol

What are you looking at, nerd?

I guess how success is seen is really dependent on your point of view. To me going from an overwhelming first place position, and being expected to easily take first place again, to fighting it out for second place and only barely holding your ground because of brand name is not really a success. But I guess if some people want to call it that or a victory or whatever then more power to them.
