Then why the outcry for the XCX character designs? People were fine with XC, but a lot of them hated the XCX ones.

Also, he is still doing some character for XC2. Aswell as other designers.

You mean Xenosaga Episode 2? There was an outcry about that one. The XCX character art style was great, if anyone complained about it, then I doubt they were fans of Xeno games. It's XC2 that people are upset with.

The reason for the difference with the first XC is because it wasn't developed with the intention of being a Xeno-game. It was originally going to be called Monado: Beginning of the World.

The big problem with XC2's character art is not only that the style doesn't match up with other Xeno games, but also that the character art looks very cheap, like it was done by an anime outsource company that specialized in Sailor Moon knockoffs.

No, I was talking about XCX.

So, a "Xeno" game has to have a distinctive art style because it's called a Xeno game? Even if the character designer is the same for all these games, I don't think it has to look like a Xenogears game. There is no rule there. And personally, I don't have an issue with either design. But to each their own. It's just too sad that both XCX and XC2 are causing just an outcry of subjective tastes in character design before people even got their hands on it.

I can't call them bland or cheap looking.

I can see why some people would not like the art style. Some people don't like that anime look, like.. at all, and that's understandable. The same does with realism, which is where I stand, but I don't care really. It's fine either way

I still don't see an issue with it. It's not like Final Fantasy follows a certain style or that Zelda games follow a certain style. It's not like XCX had the same style as XC. There is no definitive one established on this franchise.

Probably blasphemy for Dragon Quest fans, but I would whole heartly welcome a new style for the franchise. The current one doesn't allow drastic design changes and this leads to a bland and repetitive look on characters throughout the series and everything else that uses it.

Kunihiko Tanaka's character art style is one of the defining pillars of the Xeno games. For 20 years.

You should know one of the main complaints about X is characters model and design

I always look at this sort of art style as a way for the developers to say "we want a bigger game than the hardware can yield if going into a realistic design". I don't think there's anyway possible for a game like BOTW or this one to be done in a realistic way and have it remain as large as it is. The art is chosen as a compromise.

Having said that, anime is a HUGE turn off for me and it's going to have to get like straight 9.5's across the board for me to gain interests in it again. I own the original Xenoblade too, so it's not like I WANT to ignore it.

I am fine with graphic design they have gone with this one. While I enjoyed XCX, that style ages really fast and pretty badly. This one works out a bit better and really the only truely bad design is that of the main character Rex and that is because he is some how both a bland generic young hero lead and wearing chaps at the same time.

But graphically as this is HD this style works quite well and probably helped cut down on development time, as they didn't have to get ultra details to make certain things look realistic. My biggest concern is the Blades, since I heard a number of them are done by different artists, there is a possibility they will clash to greatly with the overal visuals.

And as I predicted, these are clearly not fans of the Xeno franchise.

You can find the same sorts of commentary of Dragon Quest: http://nintendoeverything.com/square-enix-talks-about-why-dragon-quest-isnt-popular-in-the-west/  https://steamcommunity.com/app/410850/discussions/0/485622866442375040/ You can find anyone to hate any artstyle, including those beloved by fans longterm fans. Opinions are a dime a dozen, their opinions on how something should look different from the tradition don't matter. Fan opinions are what matters, as they're far more relevant than some random person's opinion.

If a developer is going to replace a character model style, it is never a good idea to replace it with something that looks cheap and generic. This is why longtime fans despise the XC2 art style. The characters that are getting the most praise are the ones done by Nomura which are closest to the Tanaka style.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

I never saw a problem with Xeno X's style. It looks really good to me.

This style on Xeno 2 is fine aswell.

Like... i wish people would stop picking on non-problems and just enjoyed the series.
