Forums - General - Disney CEO talks about launching their own streaming service

Hmm it seems disney is overestimating their content. Good luck with that.

Yeah, Disney's lame anyway. I might enjoy watching sports on TV if I found programming about groups of men trying to get a ball into a net/hole interesting; but you know, I was born after 1950, so....

Screw that, have netflix and dont plan on getting other streaming services.
Guess this means goodbye disney.

But Netflix is the worst one? I've never been terribly impressed with them.

I don't even bother with Netflix. Good luck trying to sign me up for this. Haha.

I don't want streaming, I want a digital library akin to what Steam offers where I own the content on offer.

That would actually be cool.

There's Apple and Google. Both provide purchase and rental services, and have libraries vastly exceeding Netflix in size.

The real problem is they cost an asston. With games it's a little different, one game can give you a few hours to hundreds of hours of entertainment. While films are 1-3 hours and cost about the same price. You can buy seasons of shows, but they are like game + all expansion prices.

No, not very much. They're quite entertaining at best, but usually not that good. I'd rather use my time on more interesting things.

That's pretty sad - your reasoning, especially. Saying you're not interested in movies is understandable, for as sad as it might be, no one can have interest in all forms of content. However, saying they're "usually not that good" just sounds cheap, like you're not even trying. Looking at things that way, games aren't usually that good either, since most of them are average or bad.

I don't mean they're necessarily bad either. I mean just that they're not good enough to feel worth my time. The vast majority are, in a way, very similar to each other, or lacking an especially interesting concept. Usually they're not very deep either, and I find the non-interactivity a bit off-putting. I'm OK with good movies, but usually they need at least an interesting concept. I know most games aren't that good either, but then again, I'm still (and will be for a long time) in the process of going through the good games of my backlog.

The movie industry should follow the lead of gaming platforms like steam or origin where your registration is free and you buy per item. Maybe even consolidate into one superplatform like the android playstore. Few people will buy more than one subscription, but the would be willing to shop for individual movies and shows.

Amazon Video does that (having Prime just grants you access to some stuff with no additional payment), and so does Vudu. Heck, PlayStation Video does, as well.

And in the meantime Netflix keeps raising its prices as well (at least here) while losing content.

I have cable and Netflix, not getting anything else. No HBO, CBS, Disney, Amazon Prime, PS Vue.

CBS has their own paid services now?  That's funny considering you can get CBS through antenna.

Didn't you hear about the Star Trek Discovery controversy. It's only available on CBS all access (streaming, it's not airing) in the USA to help launch their own streaming service. It's still on Space channel in Canada (although that's a premium channel), can't get it on regular channels.

I think that alot of those single channel streaming services will die out after a bit because they can't offer enough content to warrant the price and there's just too many. It's why all-in-one streaming services like netflix will become the new cable tv and alot of those channels will give in to it.
