Forums - Nintendo - Square Enix just hinted at something FFXV related coming to the Switch

Are you people ignoring the big huge pictures posted? That is the Pocket Edition. It's 10 episodes for mobile phones and W10. Not Switch. That abomination is what this is.

It sounds like the Switch version is it's own thing to be announced later. The Pocket Edition to me sounds like a cool idea, the same story/quest as the console version just with chibi graphics and more bite sized play chapters. I don't see the big deal, it's for mobile I mean you're not going to get high end graphics becuase it has to work with phones that are 2-3 years old, but it's still neat.

Wait i'm confused

Is the pocket version a switch game or the mobile?

I'll paraphrase the quote as best as possible:

"You asked the question what other things have we got planned for the future, we can't give you any complete solid details right at the moment but uh we very much want to do as much with the game and franchise as possible. There's another certain console out there certain people may be thinking about, sounds a little bit like you guys, your name "Twitch". I think we'll just leave it there. (someone in the crowd "woooos!" in celebration). I mean everyone on the Final Fantasy XV team loves this specific console, it sounds a lot like "Twitch". So you uh maybe might want to think something about that in the future."

Sounds like this will be probably it's own version, I think what SE may be doing is making a general "Switch" engine which can run downgraded versions of their PS4 games more less.

Uh....hu.  Yeah, no, that's not how porting works?  Moving from engine to engine is a colossal pain in the ass.  And given that UE4 is natively supported on Switch, they'll just use that for their future games.  And I doubt a company so clearly fed up with engine development would spend a fortune developing a new engine for 1 game.

Maybe they rebuild it in UE4 though, since FFVII has some shared gameplay.  But I doubt even that.  If it is the legit FFXV, maybe we just overestimated the optimization issues with the Luminous engine.

And still, SE is expanding the Final Fantasy XV universe without addressing the patchy story. I'm glad they are finally adding a proper chapter select into the main game. I hope this means that I can chapter select the DLC episodes from within the main game aswell, and not from the main menu.

Maybe its both? Mobile and Switch!

I think they would have just announced it for the Switch right there then. I think the Switch version is going to be its own thing. If they can make a version with completely different graphics for mobile phones, they definitely can do the same for the Switch and give it its own version.

You can make the a version of the game on a PS2 if you really, really, really want to. Case in point, they're making basically what appears to be the same game just in a different art style for smartphones.

Switch could have its own version just with Xenoblade X/Zelda: BoTW tier graphics. It's just whether or not they wanted to put that much effort into doing so, I guess they do. Perhaps early strong sales of the Switch sealed the decision.

My point is that's not really a solution to porting issues that makes any financial sense.  Yes, FFXV has a smartphone version that did exactly that.  But it is stripped down in more ways than visuals and has a fraction of the production value, effort, or budget.  If they want to bring the entirety of FFXV to the Switch - the full size world, the cutscenes, the full length story, the mechanics, all of it - to the Switch but with lower graphical fidelity, rebuilding THAT in a new engine would be an absolute nightmare.  I concede that UE4 could work since they are doing similar gameplay things with FFVIIRe which could serve as a foundation.  But developing a whole new engine to use to rebuild all their games for Switch?  That would be taking the path of *most* resistance.

The could keep the FMV sequences and just run those as video on Switch and then the gameplay segments could run off the Switch specific engine.

It requires work, but as I said I guess they have deemed it worth it. Making an entirely new FF game from scratch for Switch would require far more resources.

The Square-Enix CEO did say several months ago he wanted as many Square-Enix games as possible on the Switch. If they are willing to do that for XV, I have to think FFVIIR is also going to happen on Switch too.

Ah, but there ARE no FMV/prerendered cutscenes in FFXV.  Or exceptionally few.  They run in real time.  Now they could make videos out of those but now you have potential file size issues.

Now yes, I agree that if they have plans for XV, they likely have potential plans for FFVIIRe and the remasters.  But those are all on engines the Switch can theoretically handle at lower settings.  XV is the odd ball of SE's big titles, the only one built on an engine that has never run on anything lower than Xbone and PS4 and had development issues so it isn't the world's easiest toolset.  But maybe it is more flexible than we thought.  Or maybe they DO rebuild it in UE4, since FFVIIRe is using it and has foundational similarities.  Those are, in my mind, the most likely options.
